Growth tasks and obstacles faced during adolescence
stage
Adolescence

- is a transitional phase in which an individual undergoes significant

physical and psychological transformations, shifting from childhood to
adulthood. During this time, rapid changes in body and mind require the
adoption of new social roles.

- before this transition, adolescents frequently encounter various

challenges and conflicts. It is a phase where they shift from dependence to
independence, requiring substantial adaptation to physical and social
transformations.

OVERVIEW OF PHYSICAL CHANGES DURING ADOLESCENCE

For GIRLS – Early physical changes may begin around the ages of 10 or 11,
though they can start as early as 8 or as late as 13 years.

Physical changes during puberty:

1. Development of breast.
2. Changes in body shape and height.
3. Growth of pubic and body hair.
4. Onset of menstruation or monthly period.

For BOYS – Physical changes typically begin around ages 11 or 12, but they
can start as early as 9 or as late as 14 years old.

Physical changes during puberty:

1. Growth of the penis and testes (testicles).

2. Changes in body shape and height.
3. Erection with ejaculation.
4. Growth of body and facial hair.
5. Changes in voice.
ENHANCING ADOLESCENT NUTRITION
Adolescent nutrition can be enhanced through various strategies,
including:
1. Acknowledging the higher nutritional needs of adolescents.
2. Providing nutrition education to encourage healthy eating habits as
outlined below;
3. Consuming balanced meals at appropriate times.
4. Limiting overconsumption of sugary and fatty foods.
5. Reducing the intake of sweets and junk food between meals.
6. Engaging in regular physical activity to burn calories and build muscle.
7. Consistently eating a healthy breakfast.
8. Opting for sugar substitutes if at risk of obesity.
9. Ensuring poultry, meat, and related products are properly cooked and
hygienic.

GUIDING ADOLESCENT CHILDREN ON PERSONAL HYGIENE ESSENTIALS

BODY ODOR – During puberty, sweat glands in the armpits and genital areas
become active. It is crucial to regularly change underwear and clothing worn
close to the skin, as these garments collect sweat, body fluids, and dead skin
cells, which can attract bacteria.

SMELLY FEET – Smelly feet and shoes can be an issue, regardless of your
activity level. To prevent this, give your feet extra care during showers and
ensure they are fully dry before putting on socks and shoes. It’s also helpful
to rotate your shoes and choose cotton socks over synthetic ones.

DENTAL HYGIENE – Brushing your teeth twice daily, flossing, and visiting the
dentist regularly are essential to prevent bad breath, gum issues, and tooth
decay.

STAR EARLY – BEFORE PUBERTY: If you consistently reinforce the importance

of personal hygiene and provide regular guidance, most adolescents will
eventually develop good hygiene habits over time. With continuous support
and encouragement, they will come to understand the value of maintaining
proper hygiene and adopt these practices into their daily routines.

Assessing an adolescent’s growth through the key

individuals in their life.

Teens modify their behavior, activities, etc. to be accepted by a Peer group.

As adolescents strive for acceptance within their peer group, they often
make conscious efforts to modify various aspects of their lives. This includes
adjusting their speech, clothing choices, behavior, interests, and activities to
mirror those of their peers. This desire for conformity is driven by the need to
fit in and gain approval from others, as peer acceptance plays a critical role
in their social and emotional development. The increasing similarity between
peers not only offers them a sense of security but also serves as a powerful
affirmation that they belong to their chosen group, reinforcing their self-
esteem and sense of identity. Over time, these changes contribute to their
social integration and help solidify the bonds that define their relationships
with others.

Many parents overlook the positive impact of peer pressure. As teens mature
cognitively and emotionally, they can influence each other to make better
decisions and avoid bad ones. Wanting to “fit in,” teens often engage in the
same hobbies or activities as their friends, strengthening bonds through
shared experiences. Generally, teens seek peer groups with similar interests,
backgrounds, or views, but as they explore their identity, they may also
connect with groups that have different interests.

In conclusion, throughout adolescence, the quantity of close friendships

tends to decrease, but the depth of these relationships grows, becoming
more trusting, intimate, and vulnerable. At the same time, the number of
casual acquaintances increases as young people’s social circles expand. This
growth is influenced by advancements in communication technologies, new
social and recreational opportunities, diverse educational experiences, and
part-time or full-time work.

THE FAMILY’S INFLUENCE ON ADOLESCENT DEVELOPMENT

Developmental theories see adolescence as a stage of growth focused on

identity formation. This perspective suggests that the family’s influence
diminishes or becomes more limited during this period in the lives of young
people.

Research indicates that strong, positive family bonds act as protective

factors against various health risk behaviors. While the nature of family
relationships may evolve, maintaining stable family connections and a
secure emotional foundation remains essential for the healthy development
of adolescents.

FAMILY REMAINS ESSENTIAL

It’s common for young people to start thinking independently and

questioning their lives and family dynamics. These changes can lead to
periods of anger and frustration directed at the family, but in most cases,
these feelings are temporary or situational.

ADOLESCENT’S ARE GAINING INDEPENDENCE WHILE STILL GROWING.

Young people need a stable home where they can feel secure, receive
support, and experience unconditional love, especially during challenges. A
family offers a space for them to test ideas, emotions, and behaviors, while
also learning from family relationships. Even when they struggle,
understanding and support from their family help them grow.

EVOLVING PARENTAL ROLES

A parent’s role in caring for their child remains crucial, though it must adapt
as the teenager becomes more independent. The relationship shifts from
authoritative to collaborative. Parents may struggle with the reality that their
child is no longer under their control, and they must learn to “let go” of their
expectations, allowing their teen to develop their own dreams and take on
more responsibility.

8. Take responsibility for your actions—it’s a key part of growing into

Adolescence is a critical period of change, marked by physical, emotional,

and social transformations. The onset of puberty brings significant bodily
changes that vary by gender, requiring adolescents to adapt to their evolving
bodies. At the same time, emotional and psychological shifts influence self-
identity, as peer relationships become more central to feelings of belonging
and self-worth. The desire for acceptance can lead to positive or negative
outcomes, as friendships deepen and new social circles expand, especially
with the influence of technology and social media.

Healthy habits, such as good nutrition, regular exercise, and personal

hygiene, are crucial for supporting well-being during this time. Stress
management, sufficient sleep, and mental health awareness also play vital
roles in helping adolescents navigate the challenges they face. Successfully
managing adolescence requires self-awareness, strong support systems, and
the ability to adapt to both the exciting possibilities and challenges of this
transformative phase.
