Measurement, Assessment, Evaluation Guide

The document outlines the definitions and examples of measurement, assessment, and evaluation in an educational context. Measurement quantifies observations about a quality or attribute, assessment determines complex attributes of individuals, and evaluation summarizes results to make value judgments. Each section includes classroom illustrations and examples of tools used for these processes.

Activity Sheet No. 1: Measurement

Definition Thorndike and Hagen (1986) define measurement as “the process

of quantifying observations and/or descriptions about a quality or
attribute of a thing or a person."

Classroom Illustration Common example of measurement is when a teacher gives scores

to the test of the students such as Renzel got 23 correct answers out
of 25 items in Mathematics test; Princess Mae got 95% in her
English first grading periodic test; Ronnick’s score 88% in his
laboratory test in Biology. In the examples, numerical values are
used to represent the performance of the students in different
subjects (Gabuyo, 2012).

Example  Ruler
 Meter Stick
 Thermometer
 Tape Measure
 Compass

Activity Sheet No. 2: Assessment

Definition Oosterhof (2001) defined assessment as “a related series of

measures used to determine complex attribute of an individual or
group of individuals. Assessment is the process of observing and
measuring learning. It provides the teachers with a better
understanding of what students are learning and engage students
more deeply in the process of learning.”

Classroom Illustration Suppose that the quantity of interest is the level of mathematics
performance of Grade VI pupils in a school district. The proposed
measurements are test scores obtained by administering a
standardized achievement test in Mathematics for Grade VI pupils
in the district. The District Office decided to target an achievement
level of 85% for the Grade VI pupils. Based on the achievement
test results, the school officials can assess whether their Grade VI
pupils are within the range of this target, whether they are above or
below the achievement level target (Gabuyo, 2012).

Example  Objective Examinations

 Assessment Rubrics
 Essay Examinations
 Research Projects
 Portfolio Assessment

Activity Sheet No. 3: Evaluation

Definition Evaluation is a process of summing up the results of measurements

or tests, giving them some meaning based on value judgements
(Hopkins and Stanley, 1981).

Classroom Illustration In judging the quality of an essay written by the students about
their opinion regarding the first state of the nation address of Pres.
Benigno C. Aquino, evaluation occurs after the assessment data has
been collected and synthesized because it is only in this time where
teacher is in the position to make judgement about the performance
of the students (Gabuyo, 2012).

Example  Questionnaires
 Projects
 Exam
 Rating Scales
 Assignments
