Damage Caused by
Arc Flash Incidents
Littelfuse arc flash relays utilize a
125-microsecond light sampling
scheme along with an ultra-fast
IGBT output to detect a
developing arc flash and send a
disconnection signal to a circuit
breaker in less than 1 ms.
NGR

NEUTRAL RESISTANCE
Neutral grounding resistors limit the
magnitude of ground fault current in an
electrical system to protect equipment
and personnel.
The NGRs are designed to limit the ground fault
current to a safe value while allowing sufficient
current to flow for protection relays to alarm or
clear the fault.

During the disturbance, the resistor must be

capable of absorbing and dissipating the
generated energy without exceeding
temperature limits.
Specifications and Selection
Neutral resistors are used to mitigate issues such as:

• Insulation damage caused by transient overprotection

due to arc faults in grounded systems.
• Damage to motors and panels caused by arcs in solidly
grounded systems.

The two main grounding methods are:

• Low Resistance: the system trips in the event of a line-

to-ground fault.
• High Resistance: the system issues an alarm but does
not trip in the event of a line-to-ground fault.

Discharge Resistor

Discharge resistors are placed in parallel with

high-voltage equipment to release the charge
from capacitors or batteries before
maintenance. They can be used for rapid
discharges or connected permanently for
greater reliability and lower cost, balancing
discharge time and energy loss at rest.

Benefits:
• Faster discharge of capacitors and batteries.
• Personnel safety.
• Easy handling of equipment.
• Compliance with legal regulations.
• Greater control over discharge speed.
