Excel Guide for Beginners
This guide will help you get started with Microsoft Excel. Follow these steps to learn the
basics of working with Excel.
1. Getting to Know Excel
Open Excel and you will see a grid of cells. Each cell has an address, such as A1 (column
A, row 1).
At the top, you'll find the Ribbon – a menu with tools (File, Home, Insert, etc.).
You can switch between worksheets at the bottom left corner (Sheet1, Sheet2, etc.).
2. Entering Data
Click on a cell and type a number, text, or date, then press Enter.
To edit the content of a cell, double-click it or press F2.
3. Basic Functions
SUM: To add values, type =SUM(A1:A5) in a cell and press Enter. This adds all values
from cell A1 to A5.
AVERAGE: To calculate the average, type =AVERAGE(B1:B5).
COUNT: To count the number of cells with values, type =COUNT(C1:C5).
4. Formatting Cells
Select a cell or a range of cells.
Go to the Home tab and change font, size, or color.
Add borders or fill cells with color (Fill Color).
5. Sorting and Filtering Data
Enter data into a table.
Select the data and go to the Data tab.
Click Sort to organize data (e.g., smallest to largest).
Click Filter to add dropdown filters above each column.
6. Creating Charts
Select the data (e.g., A1:B5).
Go to the Insert tab and choose a chart type (Column, Line, Pie, etc.).
7. Saving Your Work
Go to File > Save As.
Choose a location, enter a file name, and click Save.
