DIRECTION AND

DISTANCE
DIRECTION is a measurement of position of one
thing with respect to other thing or a reference point

DISTANCE between two points is a measurement of

the shortest distance
There are FIVE concepts:
1. CONCEPT OF DIRECTION
2. CONCEPT OF TURN
3. CONCEPT OF DEGREE
4. CONCEPT OF MINIMUM DISTANCE
5. CONCEPT OF SHADOW
1. CONCEPT OF DIRECTION:
In our day to day life, we make our concept of
direction after seeing the position of Sun. This is
the truth that Sun rises in the East and goes down
in the West.
Ex. If Ram’s house is located to the South of Krishna’s
house and Govind’s house is to the East of Krishna’s
house, in what direction is Ram’s house with respect to
Govind’s house?
A. North-East
B. North-West
C. South-East
D. South- West
1. If A is to the south of B and B is to the east of c in
what direction is A with respect to C ?
A) North-East B) North-West
C) South-East D) South-West
2. M is to the East of D, F is to the south of D and K is to
the west of F. M is in which direction with respect to K?
A. South-West
B. North-East
C. North-west
D. South- East
3. Town D is towards East of town F. Town B is towards
North of town D. Town H is towards west of town B.
Towards which directions is town H from town F? [all are
equal distance]
A. North
B. East
C. North-West
D. South-East
4. Y is to the East of ‘x’ which is to the North of Z. If P is to
the south of Z. Then P is in which direction with respect to
Y?
A. North
B. South
C. South-East
D. None of these
5. From my house I went 15m to the North, then turned
west and covered 10m then turned south and covered 5m
then turned East and covered 10m. In which direction am I
now from my house?
A. North B. South C. East D. West
6. From his house, Lokesh went 15km to the North. Then
he turned west and covered 10km. Then he turned south
and covered 20km. Finally turning to East, he covered 10
km. In which direction is he from his house?

A. East B. West C. South D. North

2. CONCEPT OF TURN:
Right turn =clockwise turn
Left turn = Anti-clockwise turn
EX. A boy walks northwards. After a while he turns
towards his right and a little further to his left.
Finally after walking a distance of one kilometer, he
turns to his left again. In which direction he is
moving now?
1. North 2. South 3. East [Link]
7. A man started walking west. He turned right, then right
again and finally turned left. Towards which direction was
he walking now?
A. North
B. South
C. West
D. East
8. ‘A’ is walking towards south, he turns right, then left
and then again right. In which direction is he facing
now?

A. South B. East C. West D. North

9. A boy starts walking towards West, he turns left and
again he turns right and then turns left at last. Towards
which direction is he walking now?
A. West
B. North
C. South
D. East
10. You go North, turn right, then right again, then turn left
and then go to the right. In which direction are you now?
A. South
B. East
C. West
D. North
11. Sumitra walked 8m towards the north. He turned to his
right and walked 16m, then he turned to his left and walked
5m and again he turned to his left and walked 16m. In
which direction is he from his starting point?
A. South
B. East
C. North
D. West
12. Going 60m to the south of his house. Kiran turn left and
goes another 20m, then turning to the North. He goes 40m

his house from there?
A. South-East
B. North
C. East
D. North-West
3. CONCEPT OF DEGREE:
ex. Raman is facing west. He turns 45o in the clockwise
direction and then another 180o in the same direction and
270o in the anti-clockwise direction. Which direction is he
facing now?
A. West
B. North
C. North-West
D. South-West
Ex. Somesh is facing South. He turns 135o in the anti-
clockwise direction and then 180o in the clockwise
direction. Which direction is he facing now?
A. North-East
B. North-West
C. South-East
D. South-West

direction and then 1800 in the clockwise direction. Which
direction is he facing now?
A. South-East
B. South-West
C. North-East
D. North-West

direction by 900, then 1800 in the anticlockwise direction
and then another 900 in the same direction. Which direction
is he facing now?
A. South-west
