Introduction
"An organization, no matter how well designed, is only as good as the people who live and work in it." -- Dee Hock

Welcome to Organizational Theory & Behavior!

In this unit, we will focus on the question, “What is Organizational Theory & Behavior?”

Organizational Behavior “is a field of study that investigates the impact that individuals, groups, and structure have on behavior within
organizations for the purpose of applying such knowledge toward improving an organization’s effectiveness” (Robbins, 2001, p. 9). From
Artisan to Agrarian and on to the Industrial Revolution, concerns about “economies of scale” gains from mass production have prompted
leading researchers to study large-scale outputs with workers systematically, abandoning simple intuition (or gut feeling).

The evolutionary picture below summarizes these efforts. Note the cyclical relationships that exist in the theoretical development of
Organizational Behavior.

Organizational Theory and Behavior offers both challenges and opportunities for contemporary managers in the field. The study recognizes
human capital differences and helps managers to see the value of worker diversity and practices that need changing (Robbins, 2001).
Furthermore, it increases the managers’ awareness to their environment and helps them to cope in a world of temporariness. Finally, it can
offer managers guidance for creating an ethically healthy work climate, a much-needed recipe for today’s competitive marketplace.

As one of the fundamental MBA courses, Organizational Theory and Behavior provides the basic principles regarding structural and human
dynamics within organizations. Each week, a critical component of Organizational Behavior will be explored. You will discover how relevant
and practical the theories on perception, employee motivation, engagement, communication, leadership, etc. can be used in day-to-day
interaction with coworkers and superiors. By the end of this course, the goal is that you can take away these vital concepts and apply them to
your own specific work situations, and for that matter to your own personal spheres of influence. Without much ado, let us learn the bounty
of Organizational Behavior!
