Class 3
Dear participants,
In this discussion board we will be sharing ideas on the tasks you are designing for the text you selected.
Sharing ideas will certainly contribute to your task planning. You may consider these questions to guide
your discussion:
1) How does genre awareness help me design reading tasks?
2) How will these tasks enhance my students´ comprehension? (in your opinion)
Food for thought ...
Hello everyone!
First of all, I would like to say that I find all of the contributions in this forum really interesting and enriching!
Your ideas help me “broaden” and “deepen” my own.
Now, here goes my contribution…
I believe that raising students’ awareness of genres is of utmost importance. Genres function as
“prototypes” in the sense that once students have become familiar with the features of a particular genre,
they will draw on their previous experiences with such a genre to understand and reproduce novel texts
belonging to the same genre.
As Diane Millar (2011) suggests in her article “Promoting Genre Awareness in the EFL Classroom”, I would
design tasks aimed at making students reflect on three aspects of genres: context, discourse and
language.
Genre and context awareness tasks: I would first draw students’ attention to the contextual
features of genres. I would make them identify the author of the text, their purpose in writing the
genre and their targeted audience.
Genre and discourse awareness tasks: Then, I would make students focus on the organization of
discourse and I would help them identify how genres are structured.
Genre and language awareness tasks: Last, I would make students analyse the lexico-
grammatical elements of the genre in question.
