DMSF PRECEPTOR MASTERGUIDE
First Year First Sem
WARNING!!!!!
Do not Print the files shared to you. If you received said files that means you
can be trusted by the sharer. Share with caution and be careful where you send the
files (The entire student population will get into trouble). This guide is based off my
experiences with said preceptors and this may or may not help you in your studies
(It helped me so I might as well share some tips). Do not use this as a HOLY GRAIL
for your studies but more of as a guide to how to study and ACE your Evals and
Exams based off our experiences last year. Take everything here with a grain of salt
as things might change with your experience (You can ask your other friends and
cross check with this guide). I hope you will have found this guide useful for your
first sem here at DMSFi College of Medicine Good Luck future Doctors the
battle is hard but never give up.
Contents:
1. Guide Organization (Subjects, Prof, Tips etc.)
2. Anatomy
3. Physiology
4. Biochem
5. Histology
6. Minor Subjects (PHC, ASM I, Research I)
Guide Organization
This guide will use the Exam Schedule in the arrangement of subjects. The
format used will be as follows:
● Subject
● General Tips for the subject
o Preceptors
▪ Tips and Tricks
I will only be able to share about the LECTURE Preceptors as the Preceptors are
the same for each section. For Lab I can share a bit of info from the preceptors we
had and some comparisons I was able to make with my friends (Applies only to
Physio Lab), Histology is the only exception since both sections shared the same
Preceptors. The contents you are about to read are based solely off PERSONAL
experience of the writer. Study Hard and Study well. I suggest investing in BOTH
physical and e-copies of the book. I have decided to exclude 2 preceptors (Dr. Garcia
for Physio and Dr. Capirig for Biochem) as both have already decided to pursue
their dreams in doing residency in the States. You may get “NEW” preceptors that
we didn’t have during our time so make sure you take note of their teaching style
and how they give out questions and if they repeat them or not.
ANATOMY
General Tips for Anatomy:
● Subject was 50/50 in our time (50% of your grade comes from Lec, the other 50%
comes form Lab). In your Orientation please pay attention if they will still use this
method or if they will revert back to 60/40.
● DO NOT take Lab for granted. Moving Exams are hard but try your best to Pass
since it can really pull down your grades.
● For Lecture: Anatomy loves to repeat questions from evals and exams. Use that to
your advantage (Take note: this does not always happen as some preceptors will
change their questions or make new ones [To be elaborated further in each
Preceptor guide]
● For Lab: Take advantage when the doctors are around. Ask questions and if you
have a problem identifying certain parts do not hesitate to ask. Chances are they
MIGHT give you a point or two in the moving exam.
o IMPORTANT: Invest in downloading ATLAS 3d for your tablet. Super
helpful for laboratory.
o DO NOT RELY ON THE ANATOMAGE (While they might use it
for 1-2 items, the rest come from the cadavers and other specimens
like bones)
o STUDY EACH CADAVER. The cadavers in the lab are not the same. If
you only study the cadaver that has the “perfect” view/specimen just so
you can identify the muscles, then you will struggle in finding the same
muscle in the other cadavers
o USE THE TERMS FOUND IN SNELL! You might wonder why your
score is low despite knowing that you wrote the correct answer. The
simplest explaination is that the term you used is not what the preceptor
wanted (Yes medyo strict sila dito, although may iba na ok lang since
iconsider nila if imention mo sa kanila [ex. Doc accepted ang ____ for
number 1?] Also be careful of your abbreviations (Abbreviations are
allowed pero only the standard ex. Artery-Art., Muscle-M., Vein-V., etc.)
● th
Evals take place every week Monday 7:00-8:00 AM at the 4 floor (4 evals
usually before term) unless otherwise stated that it is cancelled or
rescheduled
● For Lab: 2 moving exams and 1 term exam
o DO NOT RELY ON “CURVING”
● Official References
o Snell’s Clinical Anatomy by Region 10 ed

o Gray’s Anatomy
o Gray’s Clinical Dissector

Preceptors for First Sem
● Dr. Alalong
o Will usually start on time so be early. Has tendency to lock the door
o Will always ask who among you have read the topic in advance
▪ Will usually give a sermon if only few have read the topic in
advance. (ex. Just remember in x weeks it will be your term exam
then after a few weeks term exam nanaman, then before you know
it compre na)
o Repeats questions sometimes but she can also switch her questions to be
more analytical
o Very approachable preceptor, she will sometimes segway the lesson into
stories when she was still a student and even give some tips. Her stories
are usually related to the topic
o PPT-Based. Although she gets her topic from the book, she will also add
a lot of new information not found. You can read the book to get basic
knowledge of the topic then read the PPT for the rest.
● Dr. Buhay
o One of the two Doctors in charge of teaching Embryology for First sem.
o BOTH PPT and BOOK based. Sometimes gets questions from the book
but sometimes his questions can also be found in the PPT.
o Pay attention to his questions as he can repeat them or change.
o Chill preceptor
o Fun Fact: Owns Kape Ta Bai in the caf
● Dr. Naval
o The other preceptor for Embryology
o Don’t really remember much but she repeats questions
o PPT based
● Dr. Tupas
o Only Teaches Radiology every after each lecture on a region (ex. Back
and Spine)
o Study the images in his PPT as those are usually what he is going to ask
in evals and exams
o Sometimes will give evals based solely on theory which can be difficult
▪ Despite this his exam questions are usually repeated and easy
o His lecture is like a mini-Laboratory session (Because you will mostly
answer and identify what part is seen in the radiographic image)
● Dr. Pecson
o DO NOT BE ABSENT!!! Learn from our mistake
o Will conduct recitation, he will ask for the attendance sheet and randomly
call people to answer.
o Read the book.
o Despite giving a lecture he doesn’t seem to make his own questions for
evals and exams because of his busy schedule.
▪ Dr. Valdez usually makes the questions for him (More on Dr. Valdez
later)
o COME EARLY TO CLASS!!! If class starts at around 8:00 he will be
there before 8:00.
● Dr. Valdez
o Department Head
o BOOK BASED. Read the book especially the clinical correlates as those
are his favourite (He even emphasizes this on his lectures)
o Repeats questions unless he gets mad (You will only know he is mad
because his questions become 10x harder)
o DO NOT BE ABSENT/LATE
▪ Dr. Valdez will get upset when the classroom is half empty and will
ask the class officers to lock the doors
▪ Conducts his lecture in the Laboratory room
● Dr. Peligro
o Laboratory Head
o Will spend majority of the lecture time on side stories than on the main
topic
o Watch his iLearn videos as majority of his questions come from them
▪ Better to make a trans of his topics so as not to rewatch his videos to
study (He uploads around 8-12 vids depending on the topic)
o Sex Joke machine
o Repeats Questions 100%
● Dr. Redoble
o PPT is just copy pasted from book. You can choose to either read the
book or use the ppt ( I read the book).
o Repeats Questions
o Only lectured twice in Anatomy for first sem (She is a major presence in
PHC tho)
● Dr. Taasan
o DO NOT BE INTIMITATED BY HIM. Doc is actually friendly
although you need to follow some “unspoken” rules to get on his good
side
▪ “Unspoken” Rules as passed down by the other batches
● ALWAYS, I REPEAT, ALWAYS HAVE YOUR MOST
BEAUTIFUL CLASSMATE IN THE FRONT
(PREFERABLY A CHINITA)
● ALWAYS BE PRESENT (WILL ACTUALLY
THREATEN TO GIVE A QUIZ IF MORE THAN 30%
OF THE CLASS IS ABSENT)
o READ THE BOOK
o Repeats questions
o Will give answers to his questions during the lecture
▪ If you hear him say “always comes out in the lecture exam” or
“lalabas talaga yan” 100% it will come out in the evals and exam
● Dr. Bonleon
o PPT is just copy paste from book
o Mostly Repeats questions
o Nothing much to say but very chill preceptor
● Dr. Obed
o Repeats questions
o PPT is simplified version of the chapter found in the book
o Will sometimes give sermon about students attitude (Happned to our
class)
————END OF ANATOMY————
PHYSIOLOGY
General Tips for Physiology:
● KILLER SUBJECT. Take advantage of first sem being “easy” to get a high grade
● Study the book at least 3x before taking evals
● Reading a lot of reading
● Uses 65/35 grading system (65% Lec, 35% Lab)
● LAB GRADE can help pull up Lec Grade (Ex. You get a 72 in the Lec but you’re
Lab grade is around 85, your final grade will be around 76 which is a passing
grade)
● Invest in your Physiology Research (Promise if you make top 3 it will really help
nd
pull your grades up in 2 sem)
● Easy to get a high grade in the Lab (Just do your PhysioEX activities since they
have the same weight as evals)
● Most do not repeat questions (But keep an eye out for those that do especially for
compre)
● Most evals are MCQ but sometimes they will do VSA
● Evals take place after 2 weeks or 4 lectures every TUESDAY 7:00-8:00 AM (For
th
floor assignments in our time Section A and half of section B 4 floor, Other half
th
of section B 9 floor)
● For Lab: One evals usually after PhysioEX and SGD (From what I remember)
● Official References:
o Guyton and Hall Physiology 14 ed th
o Boron Medical Physiology 3 ed rd
Preceptors for First Sem
● Dr. Arendain
o Subject Head
o BOOK BASED
o Read the chapter from end to end
o His questions are usually copy paste from the book but he will change 1
or 2 minor detail/s (Keep an eye out on for details basta si Doc
maglecture)
o Cannot finish his lecture in the 2 hour time period (Very seldom that he
does)
o May or may not repeat questions
● Dr. Miyake
o PPT Based
o Usually gets her lectures from Boron with some Guyton injected in her
PPT
o Repeats questions from evals to exams
▪ Seldomly changes unless told to do so (She said this to us but still
take with a grain of salt until you notice it)
o If she is your lab preceptor she will usually give a Ratio of the evals
during lab period after evals (For Sec A during our time)
▪ Take note of the Ratio as it is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT
▪ The ratio discusses the evals and gives the answers and
explanations. If you have questions regarding the answers and
corrections this is the time to share them as they will really change
the asnwer key if they find something wrong
o Very Friendly and Approachable
● Dr. Derecho
o Changes her PPT every year.
o Usually gets from Guyton but sometimes gets from Boron and other
sources as well
o A general guide I use for her topics is I read the book then the PPT
o Reuses 50% of her questions (She says this herself)
o Will walk around the classroom and randomly hand the microphone to
someone to answer her questions (Always be prepared to answer her
questions)
o Gives some of the Hardest questions in Physiology
● Dr. Bisnar
o BORON BASED
▪ Rarely uses Guyton
o Very boring lecture (She will sometimes just sit down and read her PPT)

ask in the evals and exams
o Very interactive lectures
● Dr. Polestico
o PPT BASED
▪ Copy Paste from book but will sometimes include other sources
o Uses primarily Guyton as her source for PPT but will sometimes inject
Boron
o Pay attention to her lecture, whatever she will emphasize will come out in
the evals and exams
o Madali lang magbigay ng questions is Doc promise makabawi ka talaga.
▪ Minsan makuha mo na ang answer sa pagbasa ng question
ahahhahaaha
o Very fun preceptor and very informative. One of my faves
o Ayaw niya na maraming nababagsak so tulungan niya talaga kayo
makapasa (Refer to point 3)
● Dr. Raquid
o PPT BASED
o Take note of what she will write down while giving her lecture
o Simplified version of guyton ang PPT ni Doc
o Study the tables and figures she loves giving questions based on those
▪ Very specific values minsan ang iask niya
o Repeats 50% of her questions (Or does not repeat at all)

o Her questions can range from easy to hard
▪ Sometimes you can get the answer by just reading the question other
times you need to remember a specific detail
o Read the book at least 2x before taking the evals
————END OF PHYSIOLOGY————
BIOCHEMISTRY
General Tips
● Uses 65/35 for grading system (65% Lec and 35% Lab)
● Lab grade can pull up lec grade
● Easy to get high grade in the lab
● Be prepared with 2 editions of Harpers as some preceptors will use an older
version of Harpers as reference
● Most repeat questions (Usually sa compre) but often times they can make new
ones but still repeat those same questions later on (Like during compre)
● You can actually “Pass” just by using PPT or even a Trans (Promise if you just
aim to pass PPT or Trans lang sapat na) so you could use this to study more for
the heavier subjects (Anatomy and Physiology)
● SGD’s are just application of what you learned/discussed sa Lecture
o Easy to get high grade sa SGD. Just make sure mataas pre and post test
mo and always be prepared to recite during the SGD proper (Itake note
talaga nila ilang beses ka nag salita sa isang session)
o Depending on the preceptor they can ask general questions or the
discussion can boil down the the specifics of the case
o TAKE NOTE OF QUESTIONS SA PRE- AND POST TEST! Usually
ginaulit talaga nila yan for lab exams.
● Mahirap topics sa first sem compared sa second (IMO)
o 2 sem pa ang mga proteins and A.A. diretso mga pathways pagdating ng
nd
midterms (Krebs, PPP, Gluconeogenesis, etc.)
● Evals every after 2 weeks or 4 lectures and 2 SGD’s every biochem day (Eg.
Wednesday for Sec A and Thursday for Sec B) during laboratory period (anytime
th
between 1-5 pm pero usually 1-2 pm ang schedule) at the 9 floor
● General References:
o Harper’s Illustrated Biochemistry 31 st
edition (Although I heard may
nd
32 na pero ito ang gamit namin)
o th
Harper’s Illustrated Biochemistry 30 edition (Some preceptors use
this edition instead)
o st
Harrision’s Principles of Internal Medicine 21 edition (For SGD)
o st
Nelson’s Essential of Pediatrics 21 edition (For SGD)
o th
Lippincott Biochemistry 7 edition
o th
Biochemistry 5 edition (Jeremy Berg, John Tymoczko, Lubert
Stryer) [For Topic on Sensory Systems]
Preceptors for First Sem
● Dr. Bonleon (Wife)
o PPT BASED
o Trans like ang PPT ni Doc
o Repeats questions
o Gives post quiz after every lecture (nung first sem paperful pero
th
pagkasecond sem nagtry siya ng paperless sa 9 floor) [Can help pull up
your grades]
o Always starts with a prayer (magwalk around the classroom siya and will
give the microphone at random)
o Mabilis maglecture (If first lecture siya (8-10) magjoke siya na “oh di pa
gani open ang abreeza”) seldom uses the full 2 hours
● Dr. Corporal
o PPT BASED (First topic niya and Sensory Systems (if siya parin mag
lec sa inyo) and BOOK BASED (her other topics)
o Listen to her lecture because most likely what she emphasizes will come
out (Especially sa ABG which is part of her first topic)
o Loves giving analytical style questions (Especially sa first evals malaman
mo na si Doc naggawa kasi sobrang analytical)
o Repeats questions (Only applies sa Krebs cycle iirc)
o For her other topics does not repeat questions
o Very High yield preceptor
o Will usually be very blunt and honest when it comes to her comments
especially if about medschool ang iask
o Don’t be hesistant to ask her if you don’t understand her topic (Take
advantage of this lalo na sa ABG and Krebs cycle)
● Dr. Lumanlan
o MOSTLY PPT BASED
▪ Sometimes her questions will come from small details found sa
harpers
o th
Uses 30 edition mostly
o PPT is really simplified and she adds info form other sources
o Read the book kahit once or twice just to be prepared for her questions
o Repeats questions most of the time
● Dr. Beley
o Repeats questions
o PPT Based if I can remember
● Dr. Carin
o BOOK BASED
o Read her questions Carefully
▪ She gives the hardest Biochem questions and they are very tricky if
you don’t read the question carefully and analyze
o Does not repeat questions to my knowledge
● Dr. Laurente
o BOOK BASED
o Uses 30 edition of Harpers
th
o Repeats questions mostly
● Dr. Kintanar
o BOOK BASED
o Read and answer the questions found sa Harpers (Dito siya magkuha
mostly)
o Lectured us only once so don’t remember that much aside from the two
above
————END OF BIOCHEMISTRY————
HISTOLOGY
General Tips
● Uses 60/40 grading system (60% Lec 40% Lab)
● Do not take LAB for granted
o Lab Manual can pull up both Lab and final term grades
● Only subject na same ang preceptors for Lab
● Only Has 3 lecturers for the entire year (1 sem and 2 sem)
st nd
o Dr. Vergara, Dr. Alalong, and Dr. Salaver
● Mas madali ang moving compared sa Anatomy (IMO)
o Mas mahirap pa ang Lab evals kesa sa moving sometimes
● Evals every week during Friday (1 sem only) alternating between Lec and Lab
st
for a total of 2 evals for Lec and 2 evals for Lab
o Sometimes magsabay sila if na cancel ang isa (ex. Canceled ang lec evals
for the week, pagkanext week kay sabay Lec and Lab (mauna Lec then
Lab))
● Can ask for extension sa deadline of submission for Lab manuals (1 st
sem only and
in our experience) Usually deadline is during term exam before lab moving exam
● OFFICIAL REFERENCES:
o Histology a Text and Atlas (With Correlated Cell and Molecular
Biology) 7th edition
o Atlas of Histology with Functional Correlations 13th edition (For
Lab)
Preceptors for Histo Lec
● Dr. Vergara
o MOSTLY PPT BASED
o Study images, figures, and tables sa book as she loves to ask about those
o Mostly repeats questions
o Usually MCQ but can sometimes have VSA sa Lec
o Will sometimes cancel classes and upload her lecture sa iLearn
● Dr. Alalong
o Same with Anatomy
● Dr. Salaver
o THE BEST PRECEPTOR
o PPT BASED
o Uses many sources so much better to read his PPT or watch his youtube
lecture (if available)
o Will add new slides every now and then sa kanyang PPT but you can still
use mga old versions if you have access to them.
o Listen to his lectures kasi whatever I emphasize niya lalabas talaga sa
exam (If marinig mo ang “I want you to appreciate” Most likely lalabas
talaga sa exam)
o Does not Repeat questions
▪ Honestly if mabagsak ka sa topic ni Doc kasalanan mo na kasi di ka
nakikinig)
o th
Will give Post quiz sa 1/4 paper (Can be solo or minsan by pair and this
short quiz can help improve your lec grade)
o Combination of MCQ and VSA for his evals.
o Study mga histo slides sa kanyang ppt since maglabas talaga yan sila sa
evals and exams
o Overall really fun and very high yield preceptor
o Will sometimes give tips on how to pass Histo lab and other subjects
Preceptors for Histo Lab
● Dr. Vergara
o PURELY VSA EVALS
o Study the slides for the topic and memorize its structures
● Dr. Bruzon
o VSA Evals
o Ok lang magbigay ng evals si doc
o Study her prelab and slides
● Dr. Menor
o VSA Evals
o Study both prelab and slides
● Dr. Maramion
o DO NOT LAUGH!
▪ I know ma tempt kayo to laugh once maglecture siya sainyo (Will
not spoil better to experience it first hand)
o Very Specific ang ginhanap ni Doc sa evals
▪ If more than one term ang ginapoint he will only accept the term that
he used sa kanyang pre lab (ex. Trabecula, Trabeculae, and
Trabeculum all refer to the same structure pero if he used
o Listen to his prelab
▪ Especially sa mga terms na gagamitin niya
o Very detailed mag lecture si Doc sa prelab so pagdating ninyo ng viewing
parang nagreview na kayo for evals
● Dr. Padilla
o BOOK BASED MCQ EVALS
▪ Promise na shock kami na MCQ ang evals namin
o Read the book basta si Doc Padi mag prelab as usually diyan siya talaga
nagkukuha ng questions
o Not identification but more on function ang mga questions ni Doc
o Pinakamahirap magbigay ng Lab evals
o Very Chill preceptor (If siya assigned sa group ninyo chill masyado ang
SGD room sa Histo lab)
————END OF HISTOLOGY————
MINOR SUBJECTS
I will not go into specifics anymore since one sem lang to na mga subjects but I will
just give a small breakdown on how to pass since if mabagsak kayo you have to take
summer classes and may chance rin ma OP kayo if marami kayong bagsak
For PHC RC lahat (marami naexempted sa compre nung time namin, di ako kasali
kasi I had to sacrifice PHC sa midterms for Research)
For ASM RC ang prelims, walang midterms since movie review ang isubmit ninyo,
For Prefi better read ang Ethics book na ibigay sa inyo, sa Compre may or may not
be RC.
For Research I, RC pero depende sa batch (like minsan magkuha sila ng questions
from 2017, etc.) Pinakamahirap na Minor subject. Evals every 2 weeks sa
Wednesday 6-7 pm. Marami bumbagsak nito or gina throw nila para masummer
just to focus on their major subjects (Do not throw kasi mabawi pa ang grades ng 4
nd
major subjects sa 2 sem). PPT lang sapat na para makapasa if ayaw mo mag RC.
————END OF MINOR SUBJECTS————
GOOD LUCK FUTURE DOCTORS
