Stative Verbs :

* Stative verbs are usually used in the simple not the continuous forms
* Stative verbs are verbs that describe states . These include verbs related to the
senses [ feel – hear – see – smell – sound – taste ]
and other verbs such as [ believe – love – cost – hate – hear – like – know – matter – belong –
prefer – realize – understand – want – think – look – seem – possess – forget ]
* Other examples of stative verbs :
be, appear, astonish, concern, imagine, consist, deny, doubt, disagree, deserve, dislike, fit,
impress, include, involve, lack, mean, need, owe, own, please, promise, realize,
recognize, remember, suppose, surprise, wish .

 If some of these verbs are found in the continuous form , they have
different meaning and they don’t describe state .
Examples:
1- This cloth feels soft . ( sense )
Are you feeling well ? ( emotion )

2- She has two sisters . ( ownership )


She is having a shower. (activity )

3- I imagine / believe she will come early. ( suppose)


I’m imagining what I would in the party. ( thinking )

4- I think she will be a doctor. ( belief )


l’m thinking of spending the holiday on the beach. ( plan )

5- You look tired . ( appearance)


I’m looking at the words. ( activity )

6- I can see the bird in the tree. ( sense)


I’m seeing the doctor tomorrow. ( meeting )

7- The cake smells / tastes delicious. (sense )


I’m smelling / tasting the soup. It’s awful. ( activity )

8- He weighs 70 kg. ( state)


He is weighing the apples. ( activity)
