The hina-ningyo dolls, dressed in traditional Heian-period clothing, symbolise the emperor, empress, and
their court. People arrange them on a multi-tiered platform, with the emperor and empress on the top tier

and courtiers on the lower ones. Families often decorate their homes with peach blossoms, which they
think is a great way to ward off evil spirits. On Hina Matsuri, people enjoy special foods such as
hishimochi, a colourful diamond-shaped rice cake, and sakuramochi, a cherry blossom-flavoured sweet.
