Algebra & Shapes Problems (Pack 1)

This document contains a series of algebra and shape problems designed to be solved using equations rather than trial and error. It includes various geometric scenarios involving rectangles, squares, and triangles, with specific parameters such as perimeter and relationships between dimensions. The problems aim to enhance problem-solving skills in algebra and geometry.

Algebra & Shapes Problems [Pack 1]

Algebra & Shapes Problems [Pack 1]

All problems in this pack can be solved by setting up an equation, or

equations, to help. Only use trial & error if you really can’t use algebra!

1. The length and width of a rectangle are shown below. If the rectangle’s
perimeter is 74 cm, work out its length.

………………

2. The length of a rectangle is 4 more than triple its width. The perimeter of this
rectangle is 96 cm.. Work out its length.

………………

3. A pentagon has 4 equal sides and 1 long side as shown below. Each equal
side is 1 cm shorter than the longer side. The perimeter of the pentagon is 36
cm. Find the length of the longer side.

Algebra & Shapes Problems [Pack 1]

4. Each side of the larger square is 3 times the length of each side of the smaller
square. The larger square has a perimeter of 60 cm. Find the area of the
smaller square.

………………

5. The length of a rectangle is 3 less than 4 times the width. The perimeter is 34
cm. Find the length and width of this rectangle.

………………

6. The perimeter of the square is the same as the perimeter of the equilateral triangle.
The side of each shape is shown. Find the length of one side of the square.

7. Three identical triangles, each having 3 different sides: longest, middle and
shortest, form the shape below. Work out the longest side of the triangle if:

w The perimeter of the whole shape is 91 cm

w The longest side of the triangle is 7 cm longer than the shortest side
w The middle side is 5 cm longer than the shortest side

…………………..

8. A vertex of four identical rectangles meets in the centre to form the shape
below, which has a perimeter of 152 cm. The length of each rectangle is 6 cm
longer than the width. What is the width of one rectangle?

9. A vertex of four identical rectangles meets in the centre to form the shape
below, which has a perimeter of 88 cm. The length of each rectangle is 8 cm
longer than the width. Find the area of one rectangle.

………………

10. Five identical small rectangles are put together to form a large rectangle as
show. The large rectangle has a perimeter of 36 cm. Work out the perimeter of
each small rectangle.

Hint: Make the widths as x and

the lengths as y. Form two equations
both with x and y in them.

13. The rectangle below contains 6 identical right-angled triangles. The length
and width of the rectangle is 29 cm and 17 cm. What is the area of one right-
angled triangle?
