Initialism

Initialism is an abbreviation consisting of initial


letters pronounced separately.

For example:
• DVD - Digital Versatile Disc.
• CD - Compact Disc.
Acronyms

Acronyms are abbreviation formed from the initial


letters of other words and it is pronounced as a
word.

For example:
• NASA: National Aeronautics and Space
Administration.
• NATO: North American Trade Organization.
Clipped

Clipping is one of the ways new words are


created in English. It involves the shortening
of a longer word, often reducing it to one
syllable.
Examples of clipped words
•advertisement – ad.

•alligator – gator.

•examination – exam.

•gasoline – gas.

•gymnasium – gym.

•influenza – flu.

•laboratory – lab.

•mathematics – math.
Truncation

Truncation is the act or process


of truncating-shortening something by
removing part of it.
Truncation allows you to search the "root"
form of a word with all its different endings by
adding a symbol to the end of a word.
Example: typing in bank* will retrieve results
with these words: bank, banks, banking,
bankers, bankruptcy The most
common truncation symbol is the asterisk *
