Lect 15-16

The document provides an overview of random variables and probability distributions, defining discrete and continuous sample spaces. It explains the concepts of probability mass functions and cumulative frequency distributions for both discrete and continuous random variables. The lecture aims to clarify these foundational concepts in probability and statistics.

Lecture # 14-15 (Random Variables and Probability Distributions)
Basic Definitions

A random variable is a function that associated a real

number with each element in the sample space.
If a sample space contains a finite number of possibilities or
an unending sequence with as many elements are there are
whole numbers, it is called a Discrete Sample.

If a sample space contains a infinite number of possibilities

equal to the number of points on a line segment, it is called a
continuous sample space.
Discrete Distribution
The set of ordered pair (x, f (x)) is a probability function , Probability mass function
or probability distribution of the discrete random variable X if, for each possible
outcome x

The Cumulative frequency distribution F (x) of a discrete random variable X with

probability distribution f (x) is
Continuous Distribution
The set of ordered pair (x, f (x)) is a probability function , Probability mass function or
probability distribution for the continuous random variable X, define over the set of real
numbers R, if

probability distribution f (x) is
