SONG DYNASTY

The Song Dynasty is an ancient Chinese dynasty that

ruled China from the year 960-1279, founded by Emperor
Taizu. It split into two periods: Northern and Southern
Song. Northern Song was founded by General Zhao
Kuangyin (Emperor Taizu’s former name) and the dynasty
unified China. Most of the Song dynasty’s major
inventions were made during this period. Examples are
the moveable type printing press, gunpowder, and the
magnetic compass. They also used paper currency. The
arts thrived, like poetry, painting, and literature. Rice
became a staple crop, and tea became popular under
Emperor Huizong’s leadership. They developed porcelain
tea bowls and became popular. Weak military led to the
Northern Song’s fall to the Jin people. It lasted until 1127.
The remaining Song people fled south, starting the
Southern Song. Marco Polo visited China at this time, too.
The Song paid tribute to the Jin but later allied with the
Mongols to defeat the Jin. Unfortunately, the Mongols
turned against the Song under Kublai Khan’s leadership
and started the Yuan dynasty in 1279.
