Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson certainly need no
introduction. The short stories and novels written by Sir
Arthur Conan Doyle are classics of Englich literature.
Holmes and Watson have also appeared in countless
television and movie series, perhaps the most popular of
which are the movies starring Basil Rathbone as Holmes
and Nigel Bruce as Watson. Holmes and Watson
appeared on the radio through most of the 1930s, 40s
and 50s, with scripts initially derived from the Conan
Doyle stories and then later using original stories based
upon the iconic characters. Rathbone and Bruce played
Holmes and Watson in over 200 episodes. They were
followed by a number of acting teams including at one
point the legendary English actors, John Gielgud and
Ralph Richardson. Most of the episodes begin with an
announcer visiting the retired Watson to hear him tell of
one of Holmes’ adventures. Tonight, we give you The
Adventure of the Tolling Bell.
