Ms. Jackson’s Example
It may amaze you to find out how some animals survive in harsh
environments. Some environments are too cold. Some environments are too
hot, while others are just plain difficult. According to “Extremophiles”, a lack
of food, icy water, even wildfires can all be considered harsh environments.
However, many different types of animals survive them all.
Extremely cold climates prove to be very difficult to live in, but many
animals have learned to adapt and survive. From the reading, I know that
artic foxes, wood frogs, and emperor penguins are animals that survive cold
temperatures. While reading the text, “It is Never Too Cold for These
Animals” I learned that the Artic fox’s white winter fur blends in with the ice
and snow and that this lets it gather food without being noticed. I also
learned that the wood frog of Alaska has a special type of sugar, called
glucose, in its tissues that prevents if from freezing completely. Lastly, I
learned that the emperor penguin has layers of body fat, as well as wind- and
water-resistant feathers that help protect it from the cold.
Excessive heat is another environment that gets outlasted by animals.
One of those animals is a camel. In the article, “The Ship of the Desert”, it
tells about the dromedary camel’s features that make life in the desert much
easier. According to the text, one feature of the camel are the humps that
store fat for energy which allows the camels to travel long distances when
food is scarce. Another feature camels have are their two rows of long, thick
eyelashes to keep sand out of their eyes. I was stunned to find out that
camels have a third, clear eyelid that allows them to see where they are
going during a sandstorm, and if sand is still a problem, camels can close
their nostrils to keep from breathing in the sharp grains. Wow, these animals
are built differently.
Some of these amazing animals survive extreme temperatures
underwater and under the earth too, not just on land. The Greenland shark,
also known as the “sleeper shark” has learned to thrive in freezing artic
temperatures. It swims very slowly to conserve energy which is why I can
assume it is called the “sleeper shark” Because of its body mass it stays
warm. You may find some creatures hiding underground during a wildfire.
From the reading, I found that the echidna sleeps in deep burrows beneath
the earth and can sleep deeply until a wildfire is over and insects return as a
food source. What great feats these creatures go through to live.
How amazing these animals were made that they can survive the
toughest of conditions. From extreme heat to cold temperatures and
environments, know that there is an animal living their best life. No matter
land or sea, these great beasts were made to survive the wilderness they live
in. Now, that’s amazing!
