Higher-English Language General Advice: Exam= 2 hours 15 minutes Section A: Reading Section B: Writing

Section A: Reading- 1 hour 15 minutes


Question 1: (8 marks/ 12 minutes) Read Text 1- Answer Q1 What do we learn about...? Show your ability to work out information and follow an argument/ opinion. Work out what the writer is saying and put it in your own words with embedded quotes. DO NOT analyse the language!

Question 2: (8 marks/ 12 minutes) Read Text 2- Answer Q2 Explain how the headline and image are effective and how they link to the text. Say a lot about a little. 50% answer=language analysis of HEADLINE 50% answer= presentational analysis of COLOUR, FONT and IMAGE Band 5= Link what you say to what the text is actually about. How does the headline and image give hints about what the text is about? How effective are they in linking to the text?

Question 3: (8 marks/ 12 minutes) Read Text 3- Answer Q3 (8 marks/ 12 minutes) Explain the thoughts and feelings.../ how the text is exciting. NOT A LANGUAGE QUESTION! You need to show you can identify thoughts and feelings in the text and embed quotations to support what you say. Cove the whole text. Show how they change in text.

Question 4: (16 marks/ 24 minutes) *IMPORTANT QUESTION* COMPARE how the writer has used language for effect in TWO texts Say a lot about a little. You must choose words and techniques closely. Analyse the effect of them in detail. Compare it with another text. Name and explain techniques used. Compare the effect created- Similar or Different? Structure: Introduction Explain the genre, tone, audience and purpose.

Paragraph 1 Name what language technique one of the text uses. Give a quote. Then explain it and how it is effective on the reader. After that link it to the other text and how the technique is used for effect in that text. Paragraph 2 Name what language technique one of the text uses. Give a quote. Then explain it and how it is effective on the reader. After that link it to the other text and how the technique is used for effect in that text. Paragraph 3 Name what language technique one of the text uses. Give a quote. Then explain it and how it is effective on the reader. After that link it to the other text and how the technique is used for effect in that text. Paragraph 4 Name what language technique one of the text uses. Give a quote. Then explain it and how it is effective on the reader. After that link it to the other text and how the technique is used for effect in that text. Conclusion Summarise all the techniques used throughout the text and how they create effect. Be sure to pick out enough language techniques that are used in both pieces of the text.

Section B: Writing- 1 Hour


Question 5: (16 marks/24 minutes) Q5- Describe, Explain and Inform (16 marks/ 24 minutes) - *PLAN* Writing to DESCRIBE/EXPLAIN Use techniques for describing and explaining *PLAN* Write about 1.5 sides Paragraph, spell and punctuate properly Use interesting vocabulary for effect Indent paragraphs Who are you writing to? (Audience)- Show this in your writing Why are you writing? (Purpose)- Show this in your writing What format are you writing? Magazine? Letter? DO NOT USE COLUMNS OR PICTURES! Show the examiner you understand what you are writing and who you are writing to.

Question 6: (24 marks/36 minutes) Q6- Argue and Persuade (24 marks/ 36 minutes) - *PLAN* Writing to ARGUE/PERSUADE Use techniques such as AFORREST.- Alliteration, Facts and Figures, Opinion, Rhetorical questions, Repetition, Exaggeration, Similes and Triples.

Write about 2-2.5 sides Write to the correct person and to the correct style. PARAGRAPH, SPEELING AND PUNCTUATION! Indent paragraphs Who are you writing to? (Audience)- Show this in your writing Why are you writing? (Purpose)- Show this in your writing What format are you writing? Magazine? Letter? DO NOT USE COLUMNS OR PICTURES! Show the examiner you understand what you are writing and who you are writing to. Remember to use the right TONE. Dont be aggressive-this isnt persuasive. **This question carries the most marks so do it before question 5!**

Writing Reminders: Question 5= 1.5 sides Question 6= 2-2.5 sides Examiners like originality but it should be sophisticated and mature. Well planned and concise answers are far more successful than long waffly answers. Punctuate not only accurately but for effect. Spend any spare time checking through your answers.
