Machine Learning-based Traffic Classification for Network Security
Abstract:-
The complex landscape of modern networks, teeming with diverse applications and
evolving threats, outpaces the capabilities of traditional traffic classification methods.
Port-based and Deep Packet Inspection techniques stumble in the face of this dynamic
reality, leaving networks vulnerable. Machine learning (ML) emerges as a powerful ally,
offering its adaptability and learning prowess to tackle this critical challenge. This work
explores the potential of ML-based traffic classification for enhanced network security.
We delve into the promise of building accurate and adaptable models that can
autonomously learn from network data, unlocking the ability to proactively identify
known and emerging threats. But this path is not without obstacles. Feature engineering,
model selection, interpretability, and real-time performance pose demanding challenges
that must be surmounted. By conquering these hurdles, we pave the way for real-time
insights into network traffic, empowering improved threat detection and response
mechanisms. Ultimately, this work aspires to illuminate the path towards robust and
proactive network security through the integration of ML-powered traffic classification.

Problem Statement:-
Network security hinges on accurately classifying diverse traffic, but traditional methods like
port numbers fall short against evolving threats and new applications. Machine learning
offers a promising solution: adaptable models trained on traffic data can achieve higher
accuracy and proactively detect threats. However, challenges like choosing effective features,
training efficient models, and ensuring real-time performance must be tackled. Mastering this
challenge will unlock real-time traffic insights, strengthening network security with improved
threat detection and response.
