CLASS: VIII Pressure - Answers
Fill in the blanks:
1. Pressure of liquid is ---same--- in all directions at same depth.
2. Gases and liquids are collectively known as –fluids.
3. Pressure exerted by air at any point on the earth is called ----atmospheric pressure.
4. Atmospheric pressure is measured by using barometer that is made by E. Torricelli.
5. Atmospheric pressure decreases with altitude.
6. Pressure exerted by 76 cm high column of mercury is equal to one atmospheric pressure.
7. A liquid exerts pressure in all directions.
8. Pressure in solids depends on force and area.
9. Pressure in liquids depends on depth and density of the liquid.
Answer the following
10. When a man stands on a chair, his area of contact with the chair is less and the pressure exerted
is more. So the chances of its breaking are more while standing.
11. In order to withstand high pressure at greater depth as Liquid pressure increases with increase
in depth.
12. Take an empty plastic bottle and make 4 holes at the same heights on different sides. Fill the
bottle with water. We can see that water rushes out through all the holes with equal pressure.
13. Atmospheric pressure decrease with increase in altitude. If the pressure of atmosphere is
changed suddenly, the blood vessels in our body will burst due to the pressure of the blood and
other fluids inside. So astronauts wear pressurized suits as there is no air in space (and no air
pressure).
14. As there is no air in space and no pressure, astronauts wear these suits to have a balance in
pressure.
15. This is because the pressure of the blood in our blood vessels and that of the other fluids
present in the body balances out the atmospheric pressure.
16. A school bag with a strip of wide cloth band - since the area of contact is larger and this reduces
the pressure exerted on our shoulders.
17. As Pressure = Force/Area which means lesser the area, greater will be the pressure and the
cutting becomes easier.
18. Atmospheric pressure balances the weight of the water inside the glass.
19. A block of size 20 m x 10 m x 5 m exerts a force of 30 N. Calculate the maximum & minimum
pressure exerted by the block on ground?
Minimum pressure = Force/area = 30/20x10 = 30/200 = 0.15Pa
Maximum pressure = Force/area = 30/10x5 = 30/50 = 0.6 Pa
20. Give reason
a. When the rubber sucker is pressed, the air inside is forced out leaving a low pressure area
The higher air pressure outside presses down on the rubber and makes it stick to the wall.
b. To increase the area of contact and reduce the pressure exerted on the ground
c. To increase the area of contact and reduce the pressure exerted on the ground.
21. When sucked, air inside the straw is removed leaving a low pressure area inside the straw. The
higher air pressure pushes the water into the straw.
22. Near the base.
Pressure at a point within a liquid increases with increase in depth.
23. Area = Force/Pressure = 3072/48 = 64 m2.
24. This is because air exerts pressure on the rubber sheet.
25. Force = pressure x area = 25 x 100 x 10-4 = 0.25 N.
HOTS
26. A camel. Camel have a flat and broad feet when compared to donkey and horse, so it exerts less
pressure on the sand and moves, whereas the donkeys and horse feet will penetrate into the
sand as the area is less.
27. The double tyre increases the area of cross section and will reduce the pressure exerted.
28. Because it reduces the pressure on the ground by the tank, as the area is more the pressure
exerted will be less.
29. Because snow sledges have larger area which will reduce the pressure and makes the
movement easy through the snow.
30. A fat tyre. For the easy movement of cycle on the sand, a cycle with fat tyre will be suitable as
the area of contact of the tyre with the sand is more which will reduce the pressure exerted.
31. Higher the area, lesser the pressure. The high rise building have very high weight and to reduce
the pressure exerted on the ground, foundations are kept high.
32. When area on which the pressure of the load is exerted increases, the pressure per unit area
decreases. Hence the pressure on their head is reduced.
33. Area is less for a sharp nail compared to a blunt one. As the area is less pressure will be more so
it is easy to hammer a sharp nail on the wood.
