Some people think that the best way to reduce crime is to give longer prison

sentences. Others, however, believe there are better alternative ways of reducing
crime. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Essay

Many individuals think that giving longer prison sentences is the great way to decline crime.
Others, however, believe there are better alternatives of reducing crime. This essay will
discuss both perspectives before concluding that I am in favor of the later notion.

On the one hand, raising prison sentences could be advantageous to a certain extent. It is
known as a deterrence that helps reducing crime in general. Specifically, it greatly impacts
criminal’s psychology, which they would be afraid of the longer punishment in order to
dramatically restrict their crime behaviors. For instance, the prison sentence for driving
under the influence of alcohol has been increased to 3 years in prison, the highest being 10
years in prison, this new regulation has reduced the number of traffic accidents due to
drunk-driving.

On the other hand, there are a host of compeling reasons as to why I am convinced that
there are many better options to declining crime. Education, vocational training, and
psychological support can help offenders reintergrate into society and prevent them from
reoffending. For example, Norway’s rehabilitation-based prison system has one of the lowest
recidivism rates in the world. Additionally, addressing social issues such as poverty,
unemployment, and lack of education can prevent crimes from occurring in the first place.
By investing in community programs and youth development initiatives, governments can
tackle crime at its root rather than merely punishing offenders.

In conclusion, while it is irrefutable that giving longer prison sentences can deter crime and
protect society in the short term, they do not address the underlying causes of criminal
behaviors. I would contend that alternative approaches such as rehabilitation, education,
and social development are more sustainable solutions for reducing crime in the long run.
Therefore, a balanced approach that combines strict law enforcement with preventative
measures would be the most effective strategy.
