ORGANISATION PROFILE

SHED is a registered Non-government Organization with a mandate to operate country wide. SHED is duly
registered with the National NGO Bureau and our registration number is 3117 while the file number is
INDR109232469NB. Our mission is to create an enabling environment for vulnerable children, youth and their
families to realize their full potential. SHED has great work experience supporting young people in the field of
HIV/AIDS, economic empowerment and human rights. SHED’s nature of work includes; scaling up interventions
for HIV/AIDS, Child protection, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene promotion (WASH) and economic/livelihood
opportunities for youth. We strive to ensure that vulnerable children, youth and their families access holistic
services and live meaningful lives through our programs.

Specific geographical areas we currently work in: Kalangala, Mukono, Kiryandongo and Kyegegwa Districts.

SHED’s donors, previous experience/ type of projects implemented.

2018 – 2019: Received funding from USAID RTI to implement a project aimed at promoting literacy and
retention among pupils of government aided primary schools. The key result areas of the project were:
- To strengthen community commitment and capacity to provide School Related Gender Based Violence
prevention and response services.
- To increase community and household-level involvement in the learning practice of children
- Strengthen capacity of the education system to implement the MoES Reporting, Tracking, Referral and
Response (RTRR) Guideline.

2019: Received financial support from the Icelandic International Development Agency through Kalangala
District to implement a social mobilization project aimed at encouraging parents to participate in the education
activities for their children.

2018 to date: Liaised with Katalemwa Cheshire homes to provide rehabilitation services to young people with
disabilities and their care givers in Kyegegwa and Kiryandongo. Nature of support included:

• Facilitating the establishment of caregiver support groups. These provided a platform for economic
strengthening activities like savings and loan schemes. Care giver support groups were also vehicles for
facilitating peer learning and adaptation.
• Assessment of caregivers to determine the survival needs.
• Providing tailor-made business development services to caregivers in form of vocational skills training,
attachment to apprenticeship schemes, financial literacy, increasing access to affordable finance, raw
materials and viable market linkages.
• Conducting bi- directional referrals to service providers such as health facilities and local CSOs for care
and support.
• Providing psychosocial support to caregivers of children with disabilities. Support included counselling,
supply of nutritional supplements and provision of skills in agronomy and kitchen gardening.
• Liaising with health facilities to integrate specialized services targeting young people with disabilities in
medical outreaches.
• Establishing strategic partnerships with service providers and other organizations working with people
with disabilities as a means for increasing access to specialized health care and rehabilitation services.
• Conducting behavioural change campaigns to shift negative social norms, stereotypes and attitudes
among care givers especially the male parents.

2017-2018: Partnered with Prosperity Mission Uganda to implement a Community linkage and referral
framework project in Kyegegwa District with support from Baylor College of Medicine and Children’s Hospital.
Following a client-based approach and Differentiated service delivery model in Line with the UNAIDS 95-95-95
Strategy, we implemented several activities targeting people living with HIV/AIDS and Orphans and Vulnerable
Children. Some of the specific activities implemented under this project include;

Community Health to Facility framework component

1st 95
- Conducting small group HIV/AIDS Sensitization /pre-test counselling among KP and PP
- Supporting trace contact of index TB clients for TB screening and SGBV
- Conducting HTS outreaches to the target Key Populations and Priority Populations plus partners and
members of index clients and OVCs
- Facilitating monthly meetings between stakeholders at health facility for coordination.

- Liaising with ART-clinic In- charges to follow-up lost to follow up HIV/TB Clients through Community
Health Workers
- Coordinating and conducting referrals and linkages from community to Health facility and vice versa
through Community Based Health Workers and Linkage and Referral Assistants stationed at Health
Centre IIIs.
- Supporting quarterly SGBV Clinics in collaboration with Community Development Officers
- Monitoring and supporting formation of VSLA among PHA Households to enforce adherence
- Conducting refresher training to psychosocial counsellors
- Supporting existing PLHA groups with quarterly sub grants to roll out the differentiated service delivery
model

- Monitoring and conducting home based visits to PLHIV for adherence
- Quarterly follow up with clients with unsuppressed viral load for adherence and psychosocial counselling
- Procurement of nutritional food supplements and seedlings to support Kitchen gardening

OVC Component

- Profiling young people with disabilities and their households to determine their survival needs. -
Counselling care givers of young people with disabilities - Forming and empowering caregiver
groups.
- Identifying, assessing and enrolling OVCs infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.
- Following up HIV+ OVCs, exposed infants/children lost to follow-up, missed appointments and survivors
of SGBV.
- Conducting meetings with care givers to fill education forms. - Facilitating para-social worker monthly
meetings
- Conducting care giver training in nutrition and kitchen gardening - Conducting HTS for OVCS.
- Conducting Para-social worker monthly meetings
- Supporting management of child abuse cases
- Conducting meetings with care givers to fill birth registration forms
- Conducting training with care givers on community skills including hair dressing and Soap making.

2010: Received a grant from Icelandic International Development Agency (ICEIDA) through Kalangala District
to implement a project aimed at providing nutritional support to HIV positive children. The nutritional support

involved; vegetable seedlings, piglets and Kitchen gardens. A total of 50 Households supporting HIV positive
children where reached.

2010: Implemented an HIV project with support from MILDMAY. The aim of the project was to provide material
support to children infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. The total number of beneficiaries in this project was 100
HIV positive children from Bujjumba and Bukasa sub counties. Support included: scholastic materials, vegetable
seedlings, blankets, mattresses and mosquito nets.

2010: Received a grant from the Belgium Technical Corporation to establish Fish solar drying racks for a group
living with HIV/AIDS at Dajje Landing site. Ten drying racks were constructed.

2011: Received a grant from the International Labor Organization (ILO) to implement a project aimed at creating
decent employment opportunities for young people especially those out of School. The major output in this
project was equipping youth with technical skills in making crafts. The project also provided young entrepreneurs
with Business Development Services (financial literacy, group formation and formalization of business, making
of business plans, training in marketing, linkages to affordable finance and raw materials). The project benefited
50 youth.

Grant Size: 39,000,000 shillings

2011-2012: Received a grant from Ministry of Education through the non- formal education program to provide
tailored vocational skills training among less privileged youth. This project targeted youth between 18 – 35 years.
The project benefited 200 youth who were equipped with knowledge and skills in hair dressing, catering and
bakery.

Grant Size: 60,000,000 shillings

2011: Received a grant from the Joint Clinical Research center to implement a project aimed at scaling up
interventions for HIV/AIDS prevention among most at risk populations. The major activities were; HIV
counselling and Testing, Condom distribution, behavioural change activities among the youth and prevention of
mother to child transmission.

2009: received funding support from the Independent Development Fund to implement a project seeking to
safeguard children’s rights. Issues addressed included; defilement, child labor, early pregnancy and child neglect

2006: received a grant from UNDP Global Environment Facility to promote proper sanitation hygiene education
and promotion of ecological sanitation toilets.

SHED’s organizational structure

Board of directors; this is the executive organ of the organization which performs policy guidance and oversees
the operations of SHED Secretariat. The Board comprises of eleven members but a quorum of seven is enough
to make decisions as defined in the SHED Constitution. Some of the Board members are:

The secretariat; the secretariat is responsible for day to day implementation and co-ordination of activities of the
