Guidelines for conducting practical examination in General

Medicine
CBME 2019 BATCH onwards

Total marks 200

Long case - (60marks ) 45 minutes


Candidate should write a detailed case sheet focusing on history,General examination
and systemic examination and should write the most relevant clinical diagnosis at the
end .The common clinically relevant cases should be given to the candidate.

Short cases (2x30=60) 15 minutes each

The candidate should get two cases of 2 different systems other than the system allot-
ted in the long case.The candidate should focus on general examination and the sys-
tem provided.The student can note down the relevant findings in case sheet.

OSCE. (5x8=40)

5 stations ( 3 minutes each)

Manned stations (3)

1.Eliciting history
Eg:For this a patient can be kept with bilateral oedema . The question can be asked as
.how will you elicit history in this patient to known the aetiology ?
In this the communication skills with the patient should be a given importance.The his-
tory should be taken with system oriented relevant questions .

2.Demonstration of a sign
Communication with the patient and consent is a must in evaluating the student .
Eg: How to elicit ankle jerk or palpating of spleen .
Questions can be asked based on this.

3.procedural skills by IMG (ref.GMR2019)


For example Cardiac resuscitation (mannequin based ),or AETCOM based Osce

Unmanned stations

4.Based on showing a finding in general examination (for eg pallor ) and correlating it


with relevant clinical questions.

5.Dermatology/psychiatry based station .Here a patient with skin findings or photo-


graph can be kept and sub questions can be framed .

Viva voce (40marks )

4 stations. (10 mark each)-3 minutes


1.Radiology 2 .Drugs 3. Instruments ,procedures and procedural skills 4.ECG
