I, Sumit Mahto, express my heartfelt gratitude to my teachers and guide for their valuable
support and encouragement in completing this project on Sustainable Development. This
project helped me understand the importance of sustainability in modern development
and the role of government in promoting it.
Introduction
Sustainable development is the organizing principle for meeting human development
goals while sustaining the ability of natural systems to provide the natural resources and
ecosystem services upon which the economy and society depend. It ensures a balance
between economic growth, environmental protection, and social well-being.
Meaning of Sustainable Development
Sustainable development refers to development that meets the needs of the present
without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It is
guided by three core principles:
1. Environmental Sustainability
2. Economic Sustainability
3. Social Sustainability
Importance of Sustainable Development
- Protects the environment from degradation
- Conserves resources for future generations
- Reduces poverty and inequality
- Improves quality of life
- Ensures long-term economic growth
Key Issues Addressed by Sustainable Development
- Climate change and global warming
- Deforestation and loss of biodiversity
- Overuse of non-renewable resources
- Soil degradation and water scarcity
- Unsustainable agricultural practices
- Pollution and waste management
Focus Sector: Sustainable Agriculture in India
Indian agriculture faces several challenges such as overuse of chemicals, groundwater
depletion, and soil degradation. Climate change further worsens the situation, making
sustainability a crucial need.
Steps Taken by the Indian Government
1. Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY): Promotes organic farming through
traditional methods.
2. Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY): Encourages efficient water use
with 'Per Drop More Crop'.
3. Soil Health Card Scheme: Informs farmers about soil condition for balanced fertilizer
use.
4. National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA): Promotes climate-resilient
practices.
5. MSP for Millets and Pulses: Supports climate-resilient crops.
6. Promotion of Renewable Energy: Uses solar pumps and bio-energy.
Suggestions for Promoting Sustainable Agriculture
- Encourage mixed and rotational cropping
- Promote organic farming awareness
- Use AI for precision farming
- Subsidize water-efficient technologies
- Strengthen local markets and farmer cooperatives
Conclusion
Sustainable development is not a choice but a necessity. The Indian government has
taken notable steps, especially in agriculture. However, achieving true sustainability
requires the combined effort of the government, farmers, industries, and individuals.
With responsible actions, we can build a prosperous and sustainable future.
