Assignment 3

The homework assignment requires designing a unique metal object using Autodesk Fusion 360, with inspiration from the GE or ALCOA brackets. Students should incorporate lightweight features, such as latticing or hollowing, and follow specific design guidelines for metal powder bed fusion. Finally, they must select a printer, generate support structures and toolpaths, and submit the design file along with a screenshot of the toolpath simulation.

Figure 1. Both the Alcoa bracket and the GE bracket starting shapes are available in the Samples Section, Generative Design
Samples Project within the Data panel of Fusion 360.

You can also try experimenting with lightweight and introduce latticing and or hallowing into your model. Try to
adhere to the Design guidelines as outlined in Slide 24 of the lecture PPT for metal powder bed fusion (direct
metal laser sintering)
Depending on the size of the part you generated, select the appropriate Renishaw metal printer and place your
part in the printer build volume.
If your design is small and the build volume can accommodate it, duplicate your part several times so you can
better utilize the printer and print multiple parts at the same time.
