ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATION ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT
THAPAR Institute of Engineering and Technology, Patiala, Punjab,
Introduction : The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to a network of interconnected physical
devices that collect, exchange, and act on data using embedded sensors, software, and
other technologies. These devices, ranging from household appliances and wearable
gadgets to industrial machinery and smart city infrastructure, communicate over the
internet or local networks to provide real-time insights and automation.
1. IoT-based systems are designed to improve efficiency, enhance decision-making, and
enable automation across various domains such as healthcare, agriculture,
manufacturing, transportation, and home automation. These systems typically
consist of:
2. Sensors and Actuators – to collect data and interact with the environment.
3. Connectivity Modules – to transmit data (e.g., Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee).
4. Data Processing Units – to analyse data locally (edge computing) or remotely (cloud
computing).
5. User Interfaces – to allow users to monitor and control devices.
6. By integrating the physical and digital worlds, IoT-based systems transform traditional
operations, enabling smarter environments and more responsive services.
Objective of Activity
The objective of this activity is to design and implement an IoT-based system that demonstrates
how real-world physical parameters (such as temperature, motion, or light) can be monitored
and controlled using sensors, microcontrollers, and internet connectivity. The goal is to
understand how IoT devices interact, collect data, and provide automation or remote control
capabilities.
Circuit Diagram
Steps Performed
1. Component Collection: All required components were collected and checked for
functionality.
2. Circuit Assembly: Components were connected on the breadboard as per the circuit
diagram. The sensor was connected to the digital pin of Node MCU, and the LED was
connected to another digital output pin.
3. Coding: Arduino IDE was used to write the code. The program included reading sensor values
and turning on the LED based on temperature thresholds.
4. Wi-Fi Configuration: Node MCU was programmed to connect to the local Wi-Fi network for
internet access.
5. Testing: Once powered, the system successfully read temperature and humidity values and
sent the data to a cloud platform (Thing Speak).
6. Monitoring: Real-time values were viewed via the Thing Speak dashboard. The LED
responded to temperature changes as per the logic in the code.
7. Troubleshooting: Minor connectivity issues were resolved by resetting the Wi-Fi credentials
in the code
Conclusion
The IoT-based activity was successfully completed and achieved its objective. The system was
able to collect environmental data using a DHT11 sensor and respond to it through an output
actuator (LED). The integration of cloud services enabled remote monitoring, showcasing the
potential of IoT in building smart environments. This hands-on experience enhanced
understanding of IoT architecture, sensor networks, and wireless communication.
