LEARNING
AND ITS RELATIONSHIP
WITH THE EDUCATIONAL
COMMUNITY
Assessment for
Learning (AfL)

AfL is an approach which creates feedback for

students and teachers in order to imporve learning
and guide their next steps.

AfL focuses on both the teacher and student

understanding three key things:
Where the learner is going
Where the learner is now
How can the learner get there?
Points to take into
account

1. Feedback Driven – Provides timely, constructive feedback

to help students improve.
2. Student Centered – Encourages selfassessment and peer
assessment.
3. Instructionally Supportive – Helps teachers adjust
teaching strategies based on student needs.
4. Collaborative – Involves students, teachers, parents, and
policymakers in the learning process.

● Harmer stresses student involvement in AfL:

● SelfAssessment: Learners should reflect on

progress (e.g., through statements or portfolios)

● Peer Feedback: Activities like peer editing or

group evaluations build autonomy

● Motivation: AfL helps reduce anxiety by focusing

on growth rather than grades

Balancing Acts: Institutions must reconcile AfL with
standardized testing demands (e.g., IELTS, TOEFL prep). Science

Communication: Teachers should explain AfL’s benefits (e.g., "Your child’s errors are
opportunities for growth").
Homework Feedback: Parents can support AfL by encouraging self-reflection (e.g., "What did
you learn today?").
Conclusion
Assessment for Learning transforms assessment from a
judgmental tool into a supportive mechanism that benefits all
members of the educational community. By fostering
collaboration among teachers, students, parents, and
policymakers, AfL enhances learning experiences and
promotes equitable, student-centered education.
