SUMMARY
CHAPTER 1
VERITATIS SPLENDOR
“TEACHER WHAT GOOD MUST I DO”
On this chapter begins with the encounter of Jesus and the rich young man, the dialogue
of Jesus with the rich young man, and it is related in the nineteenth chapter of St. Mathew. Upon
reading on this chapter, the rich young man speaks with Jesus and says that teacher what good
must I do, and then Jesus speak to him about the ten commandments. Then, the rich young man
speaks again with Jesus “I have kept all these, what do I still lack?” and Jesus replied to the rich
young man if you wish to become perfect, go, sell your possessions and give the money to the
poor, and you will have treasure in heaven, then come and follow me.
To deepen our understanding on this chapter I would like to highlight the key points on
this chapter. “Teacher what good must I do” the moral life of every human person is rooted in
human dignity, what does it mean? Moral life of every human being is actually restricted,
morality is not all about restriction, but on how Man live truthfully in this world. We as human
beings we are created in the image and likeness of God, we are the perfect creation of God
because we are created in his own image and likeness, we are separated from other creatures like
animals, we are unique. Human beings have their own dignity, in our daily life God’s always
reminds us that we need to live in a moral life, goodness and truthfulness. In our everyday
existence to live perfectly is hard by being good to others while others hurting you, to live
truthfully while others fooling you, we can say that life is unfair, the question is, how I can live
in goodness and truth to others, if others are not? Nowadays, is very hard to live with goodness
and truthful because in todays reality if you are a good person many people will take advantage
in your goodness, if you live in a truthful life other maybe hate you, its very hard to deal in this
world.
Everyday people commit mistakes, and commit sins, there are some peoples who are not
believe in God and for them God is not exist, because there are so many questions if there is
God, why people is continue to suffer in pain, crimes, and poverty? Why life is unfair? Because
first and foremost people believe that God is most powerful and he is free to do whatever he
wants, but in times of troubles and tribulations, people did not feel the presence and caring of
God whom they believe, and for that reason people, little by little continue to not believe in God.
Some people cannot understand why? But the truth is if we look at Jesus hang on the cross, we
realize that before we experience suffering our Lord Jesus Christ is the first who experience
suffering. He offers his life to human race for the salvation of all, why Jesus did that? Because
we are loved by God. But we as human being there’s a lot of question in our mind but God
always remind us that if we have faith and we believe we can understand why is this happening.
If we go back in the Gospel of St. Mathew the dialogue of Jesus and the rich young Man, he says
that all your commandments I have kept all that, what is still lacking, the answer of Jesus sell all
your inheritance and gave it to the poor and come back then follow me. In our life there is such
thing that is hard to let go, Man have this nature of materialistic we value things but we are fully
value the teaching of God, our materials things will not save us but if we value the teaching of
God, if we are good to others if we live truthfully in this world we gain eternal life just like the
promise of our father in heaven.
God always reminds us that even others fooling you or hurting you forgive them because
goodness is innate in everyone of us. Our father in heaven is good likewise we must try to
become a better and good person.
