LITERARY ANALYSIS ESSAY STUDENT CHECKLIST

Please tick the items that are suitable for your essay and revise those that you do not tick to make them better.

A. INTRODUCTION PARAGRAPH EVALUATION


A.1. Background Information
includes the name, author, type of the work
includes the period, significance and plot of the work

A.2. Thesis Statement


is a summary of the main idea
suggests the direction of the essay
answers the essay question relevantly and sufficiently
includes 2-3 points to develop arguments from
is not too general or too specific

B. MAIN BODY PARAGRAPHS (check for each main body paragraph)


B.1. Presentation of Arguments
uses the points mentioned in the thesis statement
answers the essay question with a single point
is as a separate paragraph for each argument

B.2. Support for Arguments


justifies a related argument presented before itself
presents multiple perspectives through specific examples

B.3. Conclusion of Arguments


sums up, concludes and closes the argument & support
avoids the repetition of the argument presented before itself.

C. CONCLUSION PARAGRAPH
C.1. Consolidation of Thesis
is a brief but complete summary of the main idea
is mainly a paraphrased version of the thesis statement
uses a few points from the main body paragraph

C.2. Statement of Personal Opinion


provides personal opinion, suggestion or prediction about the thesis
helps the reader reconsider the main idea
gives a sense of closing the essay

D. ALL TEXT
has a clear, brief and formal style
uses grammar appropriately
uses advanced vocabulary
uses linking & transition words where necessary
has no spelling or punctuation issue
