Autumn is on the horizon, I can tell,

Orchard trees are fruitless as well.

Their outstretched boughs as if in a spell

And bears collecting honey in a dell.

their own.

Why are ‘their’
outstretched boughs
in a spell?
Amity International School,Sector-1, Vasundhara, Ghaziabad

The outstretched boughs of trees appear to

be in a spell as they are without leaves and
fruits. As a result, they are not showing
movement of any kind. It appears as if
somebody has cast a spell on them and has
turned them into statues.

QD.
Why are the bears
collecting honey?
Amity International School,Sector-1, Vasundhara, Ghaziabad

The bears are collecting honey as they have sensed

that winter is approaching due to the chilly winds.
They’re on the hunt for food. During the fall months,
bears eat and drink nearly nonstop. They need to put on
weight to prepare for winter and hibernation as there
will be no or very less food available then.

Then upon an autumn day,

The trees were dormant, and the leaves lay

Waiting for the winter snow to fall

To quickly obscure them one and all.

QA.

Why are the trees

dormant?
Amity International School,Sector-1, Vasundhara, Ghaziabad

The trees are dormant because autumn has

set in and the chilly wind has started
blowing, making the leaves dry and [Link]
a result , the leaves have fallen off the trees
and there is no new growth of leaves in this

Then upon an autumn day,

The leaves whirled freely in every way,

Until at last they came to rest

Finding a haven in which to nest.

Amity International School,Sector-1, Vasundhara, Ghaziabad

QA.

Why do the leaves

move freely?
Amity International School,Sector-1, Vasundhara, Ghaziabad

The leaves become dry, faded and light

in weight due to the chilly and frosty air
of autumn. Thus, they are easily carried
by wind and they move freely all
around.
Amity International School,Sector-1, Vasundhara, Ghaziabad

QB.

When do the leaves

come to rest?
Amity International School,Sector-1, Vasundhara, Ghaziabad

After moving and whirling in every way

with the wind, the leaves stop moving
and come to rest when the wind stops
blowing. And they find a safe refuge for
themselves.
Amity International School,Sector-1, Vasundhara, Ghaziabad

QC.

Explain the last line

of the extract.
Amity International School,Sector-1, Vasundhara, Ghaziabad

In autumn, the chilly and frosty air makes the

leaves dull and dry. Consequently, making
them fall easily. They keep moving with the
wind from one place to another. Finally, like
birds, they find a safe and secure place or
home for themselves to settle permanently.
