LAB ACTIVITY 1
BHLEZZIE JOY M. GARBIN
BSCS 3A
STEP 1: IDENTIFY COMMON COMPONENTS
1. List the intermediary device categories.
Router
Switch
Access Point
Hub
Firewall
2. Without entering into the internet cloud or intranet cloud, how many icons in the topology
represent endpoint devices (only one connection leading to them)?
These are typically PCs, laptops, printers, IP phones. [Link]’ll need to count them in your
topology in the Pocket tracer.
3. Without counting the two clouds, how many icons in the topology represent intermediary
devices (multiple connections leading to them)?
Usually routers, switches, and access [Link] rely on the count in your topology.
4. How many end devices are not desktop computers?
Laptop, printer, server, IP phone, tablet.
5. How many different types of media connections are used in this network topology?
Copper straight-through(Ethernet)
Copper cross-over
Fiber optic
Wireless
Serial
STEP 2:EXPLAIN THE PURPOSE OF DEVICES
A. In Packet Tracer, only the Server-PT device can act as a server. Desktop or Laptop PCs cannot
act as a server. Based on your studies so far, explain the client-server model.
Only Server-PT can act as a server.
PCs/laptops cannot.
Clients-server model:Its Server provided resources(web, DNS, DHCP), in clients only PCs and
laptops to request and use these services.
B. List at least two functions of intermediary devices
Routers - Direct traffic between different networks assigned by DHCP
Switches -Connect devices within a LAN, forward frames based on MAC addresses.
Access Point - Provide wireless connectivity to mobile devices.
C. List at least two criteria for choosing a network media type.
Speed and bandwidth needs
Distance
Cost
Environment
STEP 3: COMPARE AND CONSTRAST LANs AND WANs
A. Explain the difference between a LAN and a WAN. Give examples of each.
LAN (Local Area Network)
-Its limited to a small geographic area such as Home, office, school.
WAN (Wide Area Network)
-Its covers a large geographic area often connecting multiple LANs through the internet or
service providers.
B. In the Packet Tracer network, how many WANs do you see?
Typically 1 [Link] shown in the Pocket Tracer connecting LANs
C. How many LANs do you see?
Usually 2 or more than LANs, each connected to the WAN cloud via routers.
D. The internet in this Packet Tracer network is overly simplified and does not represent the
structure and form of the real internet. Briefly describe the internet.
The real interconnected WANs, composed of thousands of routers, ISPs, servers, and
submarine cables.
E. What are some of the common ways a home user connects to the internet?
Digital Subscriber Line
Cable moderm
Fiber optic
Mobile Data(4G/5G)
Wireless broadband/Satellite
F. What are some common methods that businesses use to connect to the internet in your area?
Fiber optic leased lines
DSL or cable broadband
Dedicated wireless links(microwave, satellite)
VPNs oVER broadband for secure remote access
CHALLENGE QUESTION
1. Add an end device such as PC, laptop, printer, smartphone.
2. Add a new intermediary device such as switch, router, or access [Link] it to allow
communication.
3. Create a new Packet Tracer network
At least 2 LANs
Connect them via a WAN(cloud + routers)
Verify connections by pinging across LANs.
