8 WEEK PRACTICE REGIMEN
Week 1 (90 minutes daily):
1. Pizzicato C major etude to warm up (practice legato, add drone if necessary for
intonation. 15-30 minutes, practice at di erent tempos
2. Transpose chord scales in handout to all 12 keys (2 keys per day) Chord Scale
Cheat Sheet 2 - 30-45 minutes
3. Rhythm changes and Blues in Bb and Eb, all di erent tempos, with lines from
walking ritual. Do exercise on beats 2 & 4 with metronome. Read and then
improvise your own.
Week 2 (90 minutes daily):
1. Pizzicato C major etude, 15 to 30 minutes, with increased tempo. Play without
stopping
2. Transpose cells from “1 measure cell cheat sheet handout” to all 12 keys (2 keys
per day) - 30-45 minutes
3. Rhythm changes and Blues in Ab and Db, all di erent tempos, with lines from
walking ritual- 30-45 minutes. Do exercise on beat 2 & 4 with metronome.
4. Add two feel and walking over jazz standard of your choice in a major key, slow
tempo (play along with drums and record yourself, lock in with ride cymbal).
Week 3 (90 minutes daily):
1. Pizzicato C major etude, 15 minutes, with increased tempo
2. Rhythm changes and Blues in Gb, B, and E, all di erent tempos, with lines from
walking ritual- 30-45 minutes. Do exercise on beat 2 only with metronome,
3. Add two feel and walking over jazz standard of your choice in a minor key, slow
tempo (drums)
Week 4 (90 minutes daily):

walking ritual- 30-45 minutes. Then improvise your own lines. Do exercise on
beat 2 only with metronome.

medium tempo (add drums)

Week 6 (90 minutes daily):
1. Learn bebop melody from omnibook (google images “Charlie Parker melodies),
play as warmup, medium up tempo.
2. MINOR BLUES for all the FLAT KEYS (C F Bb Eb Ab Db Gb), all di erent tempos,
with lines from walking ritual- 30-45 minutes. Then improvise your own lines. Do
exercise on “and” of 1 only with metronome.
3. Add two feel and walking over jazz standard of your choice in a major key, up
tempo (add drums)
4. Transcribe at least one chorus of a bass player from recommended listening
on any jazz song form.
Week 7 (90 minutes daily):
1. Learn bebop melody from omnibook (google images “Charlie Parker melodies),
play as warmup, as fast as you can handle.
2. MINOR BLUES for all the SHARPS KEYS (B E A D G), all di erent tempos, with
lines from walking ritual- 30-45 minutes. Then improvise your own lines. Do
exercise on “and” of 1 only with metronome.
3. Add two feel and walking over jazz standard of your choice in a minor key, up
tempo (add drums)
4. Transcribe at least one chorus of a bass player from recommended listening
on any jazz song form.
Week 8 (90 minutes daily):
1. Learn new bebop melody from omnibook (google images “Charlie Parker
melodies), play as warmup, as fast as you can handle.
2. Perform entire walking bass ritual start to nish
3. Study and play along to Will’s line and sample piano track on “Have You Met Miss
Jones”, and improvise your own after
4. Transcribe at least one chorus of a bass player from recommended listening
on any jazz song form.
