Revit Structure, Practical DEA, 2012
After installing revit structure, you can open the program either from the desktop shortcut or from start menu Autodesk revit structure 2012. When you open the program the recent files screen appears
For now, the two important items here are the application button and creating a new project
Revit Structure, Practical DEA, 2012
In the first run you need to click the application button, then click on options
Revit Structure, Practical DEA, 2012
After clicking on options, go to the file locations tab
Here you need to set the path of template file as shown above. For now, you need to understand the chart Template file
Views, sheets & settings
Families
Square concrete columns is a family
Type 2,3,
Type 1
400 x 400 mm square concrete columns is a type
Object 2,3,
Object 1
400 x 400 mm square concrete columns at grids A-1 is an object
In this basic user guide we will see the program capabilities and learn how to create elements and views, then we will see how to create families and load them to a project, but these basic information are just the start, and very hard work must be done to improve the personal revit skills.
Revit Structure, Practical DEA, 2012
To create a new project, start revit structure, then click on new project from the recent files screen
Then the user interface appears, it includes the panel buttons, where we go through commands, the drawing area, where we view created objects, the properties window, where we find properties of selected elements, the project browser window is to navigate the whole project including views, families, groups and other things we will see later,

First step is to create gridlines , from home panel
datum tab
grid
The gridlines are created to define points, planes and many other things and they can be a very "magnetic" objects, and when they move they keep other objects located at them in the same relation. After clicking on the grid symbol from datum tab, the draw window appears, then we can chose which way to use in creating the gridline.
Create a gridline by the "pick line " tool Create arc gridline by center, start & end points
Create a gridline by start & end points
Create arc gridline by center, start & mid points
Checking the checkbox will show the grid Id
Grid line
the grid Id is shown here
Checking the checkbox will show the grid Id
By creating another grid the id is automatically inserted and the relation between new and past one is shown and it can be locked so they keep their tails extended
Revit Structure, Practical DEA, 2012
This constrain is set to keep the grid tails extended not matter how they move
After creating gridlines, we move to define levels. The levels are as basic as creating gridlines, but to create levels you have to move into a "vertical" view like elevations and sections. To open an elevation view go to project browser views elevations.
Level symbol
Level name Offset from 0 Level lines Creating new levels is as simple as gridlines, and by creating them, correspondent plan views are created automatically. After creating levels, you can change the elevation value and the level name by clicking on the labels indicating them and type the new value. For this part you need to know: The hierarchy of template-family to reach the object The uniqueness of the object Apply a template to your software Create and modify gridlines and levels and understand their behavior Understand the line-object draw methodology
Revit Structure, Practical DEA, 2012
We will start to create columns and check properties, options and modeling methods. Form the home panel column" the default is structural column" clicking on the arrow both structural and architectural columns are available. by
Here, we have to understand the difference between structural column, which is used to carry loads, and the architectural column which is used for the architectural intent only.
From here, you can chose whether you model the column from it's bottom point by using height, or top point by using depth
From here, you can chose whether the column is vertical or slanted Where the other point is located at, options are the levels beside unconnected option which gives a free length of object
This options allows user to create columns at grid intersection. but beware, it is not allowed in the slanted columns
The type name, you can change the type by clicking the black arrow to show available types
From here we go to the type properties where we modify it's parameters As the grid moves, would the column move with it or not Structural properties, moment or shear connection at top and bottom, and whether to enable analytical properties for it or not
