Systematic Inventive Thinking

Need Innovation?

Tired of Brainstorming?

Fun and Free Vs. Discipline and Responsible

Innovation Defined
Innovation - Creating value by generating and implementing new ideas

Constraint enhance creativity

Sufficient Conditions for an Inventive Solution

SIT main principles

The Closed World:

No new type of element is added to the problem world

The Qualitative Change:

At least one worsening factor is turned into a neutral or positive factor

Conventional thinking

Qualitative Change: Inventive thinking

Characteristics of an Inventive Solution

Simplicity

Simplicity

The concept underlying the solution is identical to a banal solution.

Simplicity

Specificity

Look at the unique properties of the specific problem in order to use them as a basis for the solution.

The Problem Is The Solution

Investigate whether the item labeled problem can be used in some way for the solution.

Ideality
The solution appears only when it is needed. That is, when the problem arises, the solution is also there; in cases in which there is no problem, the solution would be redundant and, so, does not appear.

Innovation Methods
Brainstorming CPS Mind Mapping NLP De Bono Forced Analogies
Blue Ocean Open Innovation The Long Tail Empathic Design 6 Sigma Deep Dive (IDEO)

Innovation Criteria
1. Think counter-intuitively 2. Break Mental Fixedness 3. Work with constraints

What is Sustainability?

Sustainability
Practices that would ensure the continued viability of a product or practice well into the future

Sustainability
Challenges: Solve a problem Generate an added value Be cool

Zip Car

Toyota Hybrid

Ecodriving

Hybrid Diapers

Disposable Diapers

Reusable Diapers

The thumbtack box can also be used as a shelf

Functional Fixedness
Functional Fixedness is a cognitive bias that limits a person to using an object only in the way it is traditionally used.

PlayPump

Electra Inverter
Uses water condensation to control humidity in the room. Uses the motor to vaporize the water, cooling the motor in the process and saving energy.

Task Unification

Assigning a new task to an existing resource. We look for solutions within the Closed World, within resources that are readily available.

Creativity Patterns
Subtraction
The elimination of core components rather than an addition of new systems and functions - The Path of Most Resistance. The assignment of new tasks to an existing resource (i.e. any element of the product or its vicinity within the manufacturers control). A multiplication (or addition) of elements already existing in the product along with a required adjustment - Qualitative Change. The division of a product and/or its components according to function or symmetry, thus adding degrees of freedom. The creation/removal of symmetries or dependencies between existing product properties (e.g. colour changes with temperature, etc.).
