I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my biology teacher for giving me the opportunity to
complete this assignment on the topic 'Diptera'. This work has helped me to understand the
classification, structure, life cycle, and importance of insects belonging to the order Diptera. I am
also thankful to my parents and friends who supported me during the completion of this project.

1. Introduction to Diptera
Diptera is an important order of insects commonly known as true flies. The word Diptera is
derived from Greek words 'di' meaning two and 'ptera' meaning wings. Insects of this order
possess only one pair of functional wings, while the second pair is modified into small knob-like
structures called halteres. These halteres help in balancing during flight. Diptera includes insects
such as mosquitoes, houseflies, fruit flies, sandflies, and tsetse flies. They are widely distributed
all over the world and are found in almost every type of habitat.
Dipteran insects play a significant role in nature. Some are useful, while others are harmful to
humans and animals. Due to their medical and economic importance, the study of Diptera is
essential in biology.
2. General Characteristics of Diptera
• Body is divided into head, thorax, and abdomen.
• Only one pair of wings is present.
• Hind wings are modified into halteres.
• Mouthparts are adapted for sucking, piercing, or sponging.
• Compound eyes are well developed.
• Complete metamorphosis occurs in life cycle.
• Larva is commonly known as maggot.
These characteristics clearly distinguish Diptera from other insect orders and help in their
identification.
3. Morphology of Diptera (Housefly)
The body of a typical dipteran insect like housefly consists of head, thorax, and abdomen. The
head bears compound eyes, antennae, and mouthparts. The thorax bears one pair of wings and
three pairs of legs. The abdomen is segmented and contains digestive and reproductive organs.

• Head – Contains eyes and antennae
• Thorax – Wings and legs attached
• Abdomen – Segmented body part
• Wings – One functional pair
• Halteres – Modified hind wings
4. Life Cycle of Diptera
Diptera undergo complete metamorphosis. The life cycle includes four stages: egg, larva, pupa,
and adult. The female lays eggs in suitable places such as stagnant water or decaying matter.
Eggs hatch into larvae called maggots. The larva feeds actively and grows in size. It then
transforms into a pupa, which is a resting stage. Finally, an adult fly emerges from the pupa.

5. Examples of Diptera
Common examples of Diptera include housefly (Musca domestica), mosquito (Anopheles,
Culex), fruit fly (Drosophila), sandfly, and tsetse fly. Each of these insects has specific
characteristics and importance in nature and human life.
6. Economic Importance of Diptera
Dipteran insects have both beneficial and harmful effects. Some flies help in pollination and
decomposition of organic matter. Fruit flies are used in genetic research. However, many
dipterans are harmful as they spread diseases and contaminate food.
7. Diseases Spread by Diptera
Mosquitoes spread diseases like malaria, dengue, chikungunya, and filariasis. Houseflies spread
typhoid, cholera, and dysentery by contaminating food. Thus, control of dipteran insects is very
important for public health.
8. Conclusion
Diptera is a very important order of insects with wide distribution and great significance. While
some members are useful, many are harmful and responsible for spreading serious diseases.
The study of Diptera helps us understand insect behavior, life cycle, and methods of control.
Proper sanitation and preventive measures can reduce the harmful effects of dipteran insects.
