Dyslexia Punctuation
Teacher Guide
Why do pupils with dyslexia find using a range of punctuation difficult?
There are many reasons why using a range of punctuation can be difficult for pupils with dyslexia, such as:
• difficulties with reading which impact on pupils’ writing because they spend so much time decoding the
words that they do not see writing conventions like punctuation, noun phrases and grammar choices;
• difficulties with working memory which impacts on pupils’ writing because they struggle to use the many
skills involved in writing all at the same time.

How It Works
• The intervention should ideally be used with a group of 4-8 pupils.
• The intervention should last for six weeks, during which the components of punctuation will be
broken down into small, simple steps.
• Each lesson pack includes a lesson plan and the resources needed to complete each session. Please
read the lesson plan prior to the lesson and print off enough resources for each pupil.
