Definition of Creativity
Creativity is a process by which something new comes into
existence.

Components of Creativity
Knowledge

Creative Thinking Skills

Creative thinking refers to how a person identifies a problem
and seeks its solution. This refers the capacity and ability to put
existing ideas and knowledge together to explore new
possibilities.

Knowledge
Expertise or knowledge encompasses everything a person
knows and can do.
In order to be creative, a person should have an adequate
level of knowledge and skills n the area of his interest as
specialized knowledge can enable a person to focus on his
specific area of interest.

Motivation
Motivation determines what people actually want and will do.
There are two types of motivation:
Intrinsic Motivation
Extrinsic Motivation

Creativity Techniques

Cont..
Problem Reversal:
Problem Reversal Focuses on solving an identified
problem by turning it on its head encouraging you to
think about it differently

Example:
State your problem in reverse. Change a positive
statement one. e.g. if you are dealing with customer
services issues, list all the ways you could make
customer service bad

Cont..
Forced Analogy:
The idea is to compare the problem with some thing
else that has little or nothing in common and
gaining new insights as result

Brainstorming:
This technique which is also known as confidence
technique, allows people to be stimulated to a
greater creativity by meeting with others and
participating in organized group experience.

Cont..

Attribute Listing:
The attribute listing technique is a technique where the
problem is broken down into smaller parts or
characteristics and analysis is made on each of these parts
to develop ideas on how to improve them.

Mind Mapping:
Mind mapping technique was developed and made famous
by Tony Buzan. A mind map is a network diagram that is
used to generate related ideas, concepts, structure,
classification, tasks or any critical issue to a central key
word or idea.

The Process of Creativity

Knowledge Accumulation
This phase focuses more on the study of the background for
the subject matter which requires extensive reading, discussion
with experts, practitioners, academicians, researchers in the
field, attending workshops and seminars.

Incubation
In this phase, the individual may not be directly involved in the
creative task. Incubation may be induced by engaging in
relaxing activities such as painting, mediating or playing sports
or board games.

Ideas
An idea is a thought or suggestion as to a possible course of
action. The human mind has the capacity to think and develop
ideas, concepts, strategies, methods, solutions, etc. and these
are defining features of human beings.

Evaluation and Implementation

In this phase, a person transforms the idea into a workable
solution. The process of evaluation and implementation
requires continuous development and assessment so that a
raw idea can be conceptualized.

Factors Influencing Creativity

Barriers To Creativity
Over-Management:
Competition in the works place,
workers burdened with
assignments. This might be
caused by hectic working
environment that does not
provide space for workers to be
creative.
Personal Beliefs:
The main thing that
hinders creative
thinking is our
belief that we are
not creative. It also
causes us to limit
the way in which
we perceive and
process information

Fear of Criticism: Some

people fear criticism, afraid
that other people critique their
ideas as crazy, foolish and
impractical.

Stress: Happens
when people feel
that they are facing
extraordinary
demands,
constraints and
uncertain about
their ability to
handle the task
effectively. Stress is

Innovation

The best way to predict the future is to invent it.
