Sympathomimetic Drug Overview and Safety

Fluoxetine and sertraline are the preferred first-line SSRI drugs for treating sympathomimetics due to their mild side effect profiles. Tricyclic antidepressants are an alternative if SSRIs cause adverse effects, but MAOIs are less frequently prescribed due to risks of hypertensive crisis from foods high in tyramine. While all antidepressants carry overdose risks, SSRIs and MAOIs are safer than tricyclic antidepressants and tetracyclines, which are the most lethal, though SSRIs also have relatively low cardiac side effects compared to tricyclics.
