INTRODUCTION
DEFORESTATION:
Deforestation, clearance or clearing is the removal
of a forest or stand of trees where the
land is thereafter converted to a non-forest use.[2]
Examples of deforestation include conversion of
forestland to farms, ranches, or urban use. The
most concentrated deforestation occurs in
tropical rainforests.

WHY:
Crop cultivation
For wood paper, furniture, raliway sleepers..etc
IMPACT OF DEFORESTATION:
Soil Erosion
Loss of habitat for local fauna (in
that area)
Interferes with natural cycles like
the water cycle and oxygen cycle,
hence affects the monsoon pattern

What is Chipko Movt. :

Chipko means tree hugging or


embrace as people hugged the
trees, hence ,stopped the felling of
trees.
The movement is best known for its
tactic of hugging trees to prevent
them from being cut down and to
prevent commercial timber
harvesting
ORIGIN
It came in to existence in
Gopleshwar,District Chamoli in Uttaranchal
in 1970s. The first significant Chipko
Movement took place in Reni village in
March,1974.
Locally called as Angwal
Gaura Devi, Head of the village Mahila
Mangal Dal - first one to hug trees from
being felled

when company men marched to cut the
