During the Gothic era in Europe, paintings were primarily found illuminating manuscripts and as frescoes in churches. Tapestry work also emerged, like the Lady and the Unicorn series from 1506-1513. Stained glass windows filled vast church interiors with warm colors and depicted popular legends and stories to instruct Christians, showing some naive naturalism. Gothic sculptures projected outward more with individualized figures and lively, realistic attitudes compared to earlier styles.
