Marty Lobdell:
Study Less, Study Smart
 Take (5 minute) breaks between 25-30
minute periods of studying.
 Create a study space within your dorm,
home or residence. You can train
yourself to study!
 Take time to discover the meaning
behind a concept!
› Don’t just re-read your notes. Read your
textbook, do some practice problems, or see
your professor to truly understand an idea.
 Create, join, and utilize study groups
 Try not to over-highlight your notes
› Highlight only the most important ideas
 Recognizing vs. Recalling
› Just because you recognize a concept does
not mean you can recall the information
behind it!
 Adequate sleep is not a suggestion!
› It is mandatory for consolidation and
memory retention
 Immediately after class, review,
summarize, or give depth to your notes
 Ask the professor questions!
› Don’t just say, “I don’t get it.” Go into depth
on what you do not understand.
 Teach someone else to reinforce what
you know
 SQ3R!
› Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review
 Memorize facts using mnemonics
› Acronyms, coined sayings, interacting
images, etc.
