Topic Sentences and
Supporting details

Topic Sentences
A topic sentence should sated clearly the
topic and the main idea of the paragraph.
It should be a complete sentence which
briefly indicates what paragraph is going
to discuss.
Topic sentences is often best to put in the
very beginning of the paragraph.
Topic sentence = Topic + main
idea
Example :
Topic: The invention of the train.
Main idea: The way of life of native Americans
changed.
Topic Sentence: With the invention of the train,
the way of life changed of Native Americans
changed forever.
Supporting details
•The topic sentence in each paragraph should
be well support with sufficient details,
examples or reason.
The details must relate to topic sentence.
Supporting details should answer the
questions that follow the main ideas in the
topic sentence.
Examples :
Topic Sentence : One of the most recent
technical advances in the use of water is
development of hydroelectric power.
Supporting Details:
[Link] is the development of hydroelectric power?
[Link] did it come about?
[Link] /in what ways is it useful as technical
advancement?
