Polynomial and Rational Function

The document discusses polynomial and rational functions. Polynomial functions have non-negative integer powers of x and include linear, quadratic, cubic functions. Rational functions are the ratio of two polynomials, such as linear over linear functions. The key aspects discussed are: - Graphs of polynomial functions have x-intercepts, intervals of increasing/decreasing behavior, and extremum/inflection points. - Rational functions have vertical asymptotes from the denominator equaling 0 and horizontal asymptotes related to the polynomial degrees. - Examples are provided to determine intercepts, asymptotes, intervals of behavior for both polynomial and rational functions.

& Rational functions
Polynomial functions


Functions such as Linear, Quadratic, Cubic and so on.
 Non-negative integer power of x
 General equation:
Examples:

What is the types of these polynomial functions?

Example 1

Determine these for the below functions.
a) The x and intercept
b) The interval where the function is increasing or decreasing.
Hence, Determine the extremum points.
c) Interval of concavity. Hence, determine the inflection point.
d) Sketch the graph.
Rational Function

A function that is ratio of two polynomials.
 E.g:

 Focus on ratio functions of linear over linear only.

ASYMPTOTES?
 A line that the graph of a function approaches but
never touches.
 Ratio functions contains asymptotes.
 Vertical asymptotes: by setting the denominator = 0
 Horizontal asymptotes: depend on the degree of
polynomials in the numerator (n) and denominator
(m).
Example 2

Determine these for the below functions.
a) The x and intercept
b) Vertical and horizontal asymptotes
c) The interval where the function is increasing or decreasing.
d) Interval of concavity.
e) Sketch the graph.
