Science
• Our knowledge of the natural world and the process through which that
knowledge is built. The process of science relies on the testing of ideas
with evidence gathered from the natural world. Science as a whole cannot
be precisely defined but can be broadly described by a set of key
characteristics.
Natural World
• All the components of the physical universe — atoms, plants, ecosystems,
people, societies, galaxies, etc., as well as the natural forces at work on
those things. Elements of the natural world (as opposed to the
supernatural) can be investigated by science.
Evidence
• Test results and/or observations that may either help support or help refute
a scientific idea. In general, raw data are considered evidence only once
they have been interpreted in a way that reflects on the accuracy of a
scientific idea.
Test
• In science, an observation or experiment that could provide evidence
regarding the accuracy of a scientific idea. Testing involves figuring out
what one would expect to observe if an idea were correct and comparing
that expectation to what one actually observes
Understanding Science
• To understand what science is, just look around you.
What do you see?
Perhaps, your hand using you phone or ipad, a
computer screen, papers, pens, your classmates, the
sun shining through the window, desks ….
Understanding science
• Science is, in one sense, our knowledge of all that — all the stuff that is in the
universe: from the tiniest subatomic particles in a single atom of the metal in
your computer's circuits, to the nuclear reactions that formed the immense ball of
gas that is our sun, to the complex chemical interactions and electrical
fluctuations within your own body that allow you to read and understand these
words.
• But just as importantly, science is also a reliable process by which
we learn about all that stuff in the universe. However, science is
different from many other ways of learning. WHY?
Understanding science
• BECAUSE of the way it is done. Science relies on testing ideas
with evidence gathered from the natural world.
• Science helps satisfy the natural curiosity with which we are all
born: why is the sky blue, how did the leopard get its spots,
what is a solar eclipse? With science, we can answer such
questions without resorting to magical explanations.
Understanding science
• Science can lead to technological advances, as well as helping us learn
about enormously important and useful topics, such as our health, the
environment, and natural hazards.
• Without science, the modern world would not be modern at all. But we
still have much to learn. Millions of scientists all over the world are
working to solve different parts of the puzzle of how the universe works,
peering into its nooks and crannies, deploying their microscopes,
telescopes, and other tools to unravel its secrets.
You turn to do some research
• You are going to be faced with links that contain texts about Science concepts general
definitions.
• In groups of 4 (not more than that, not less than that), you have to read the texts,
sumarize it and present to the class.
• No PPT presentation is needed. It is a simple and quick speaking activity, but feel free to
use visual aids if you find interesting and necessary.
• ATTENTION LISTENERS: You have to make questions to the groups at the end of each
speaking presentation.
• EVERYONE in the group has to speak
