Precis Writing

• The term precis is derived from


French word “precis” or expressed
accurately.

• It also means an “abstract” or a


“gist” of a passage.

• It is one third of the original


passage. If the words are 150 then
you have to make it short to 50.
Qualitiies of a Good Precis
• Clarity –Clarity of a message find within the
text.
• Correctness- Correct Grammar and correct
idea.
• Objectivity-Producing facts as it is. Don’t add
any personal opinion.
• Coherence- Ideas should be well joined and
inter connected.
• Conciseness – brief and direct. Avoid repetition
of ideas and words.
Rules of a Good Precis
• Careful Reading
• Try arrive at main theme
• Paragraph Form
• Indirect Speech and past tense
• Don’t add your personal opinion.
• Give title to your precis.
How to solve Precis
• Read the précis at least three
times.
• Find out the theme.
• Underline the important
sentences.
• Avoid repetition of words.
• Arrange in sequence.
• Conclude with the main idea.
Solve the Precis.
Tracts of land from which coal is obtained are called
as coal fields. These so called coal-fields are not
found on the surface, but at some depth below it.
They consist of layer of beds which run under the
ground. When a layer of this kind is opened, the
opening is called a mine and hence is called as a
mineral.

• While solving this there should be two questions in your
mind that is what is mine and why it is called as mineral?
Precis of the Passage
Title- What are coal –Fields?
Coal-fields are underground tracts of land from which
coal is obtained. They have underground layers of bed.
They are called mine when they are opened.
