THE RESURRECTION
& ASCENSION OF
JESUS
When did Jesus rise from the dead?
• Jesus rose from the death on Sunday morning,
three days after his death. As the angels
announced unto the women: “He is not here, but
he has been raised” (Luke 24:6).
• The resurrection of Christ is the crowning truth
of our faith, as St. Paul proclaimed: “If Christ has
not been raised, our faith is useless” (1
Corinthians 15:14).
What is the difference between resuscitation and resurrection?
• Resuscitation is the reunion of the soul with the
mortal body, like the rising of Lazarus (cf. John
11:43-44).
• Resurrection is the reunion of the souls with the
glorified body, like the case of Jesus, whose
body was so transfigured that Magdalene did not
recognize him (cf. John 20:15).
WHAT ARE THE PROOFS OF THE
RESURRECTION?
1). The empty tomb
2). The appearances of the risen
Lord
3) The Holy Shroud of Turin

THE ASCENSION OF
JESUS
When did Jesus ascend into Heaven?
• Jesus ascended into Heaven 40 days after
the resurrection. Although the ascension
took place on a Thursday, exactly 40 days
after the resurrection, in many countries
the liturgical celebration was moved to the
next Sunday, to allow a greater
participation of people.
Did Jesus ascend from the Mount of
Olives or from Galilee?
• The ascension of Jesus took place on the Mount of
Olives, near Jerusalem, as reported by St Luke: They
returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olives".
• However, St. Mathew said that Jesus convoked apostles
in Galilee, a region 100 kilometers north of Jerusalem,
where he gave the last farewell and missionary mandate:
"Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the
mountain where Jesus had told them to go" (Matthew
28:16)
The apparent discrepancy with St. Luke can be
explained in two ways.
First, after meeting with Jesus in Galilee the
Apostles moved back to the Mount of Olives in
Jerusalem, where the ascension took place.
Second, the word Galilee in this context does not
refer to the region in the north, but to a portion of the
Mount of Olives where the pilgrims
Galilee used to camp out, which was locally known as
"The Field of the Galileans," or simply Galilee.
What is the missionary mandate?
The missionary mandate is the last
farewell of Jesus, which he
proclaimed to the disciples before
ascending into Heaven, namely: go,
teach, and baptize.
1). GO :
Jesus gave the mandate not only to the
Apostles, representing bishops and
priests but also to the disciples,
representing the laity, because every
Christian ought to be a missionary and
to evangelize: beginning from our family
till the ends of the earth.
2) TEACH:
We can teach the Gospel in three ways: by means of
preaching, like St. Francis Xavier, who traveled to
India and Japan to proclaim the Good News; by
means of praying, like St. Therese of the Child Jesus,
who never left the convent of Lisieux in France, but
offered her prayers and sufferings for the
missionaries; and by means of providing for the
material needs of the missions, like Joanna, Susanna,
and the other women, who "supported [Jesus and his
apostles] out of their own means" (Luke 8:3).
3) BAPTIZE:
The first sacrament to be administered is
Baptism, which makes us children of God;
and it is followed by the other six
sacraments, that provide for the different
spiritual needs of the faithful. Jesus
imparts the Missionary Mandate to his
apostles and disciples.
What is the difference between
Assumption and Ascension?
The assumption is the act of being brought
up into heaven, body, and soul, by the power
of god.
The ascension, on the other hand, is the act
of going up to Heaven by one's own power:
this case refers exclusively to Jesus who,
being God himself went up into Heaven on
his own.
Who replaced Judas Iscariot among the
Apostles?
In between the Ascension and Pentecost, the eleven apostles
gathered to elect a replacement for Judas Iscariot, who had
committed suicide after betraying Jesus.
There was a need to find a replacement because the number of
apostles in the New Testament had to correspond to the number of
twelve Hebrew tribes in the Old Testament. Two candidates were
presented, Joseph called Barsabbas and Mathias, because they had
"accompanied Jesus beginning from the baptism of John, and they
were witnesses to his resurrection" After praying, they gave lots to
them, and the lot fell upon Matthias, who was counted among the
Apostles" (cf. Acts 1:22-26).
Why did the risen Lord remain on earth
for 40 davs?
First, to prove that he had truly risen from the dead, as it is
written: "He Jesus ascended into Heaven of his own power,
presented himself alive to them by many proofs after he had
suffered, appearing to them during forty days and speaking
about the Kingdom of God" (Acts 1:3).
Second, to prepare the Apostles, and especially Peter, for
the task of continuing his mission, as it is written: taken up,
after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the
Apostles whom he had chosen" (Acts 1:2).
JESUS SITS AT THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD
What happened to Jesus after his ascension?
We believe that, after ascending to Heaven, Jesus sat at the
right hand of God the Father, as the Gospel proclaims: "The
Lord Jesus is taken up into Heaven and took his seat at the
right hand of God"
(Mark 16:19).
This was prophesied by King David when he wrote: "The
Lord [God the Father] says to my Lord [God the Son]: "Sit at
my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your
feet" (Psalm 110:1).
What is the meaning of sitting at the right hand?
The seat at the right hand is an idiomatic expression that
means "to have full trust and authority." In antiquity, the
queen used to sit on the left hand of the king, while the
prime minister, or the heir to the throne, was on his right.
Therefore, the expression to sit at the right hand, or to
be the right hand, means to have the full confidence and
power of the king. The custom arose from the fact that
the right arm was a symbol of power because kings
carried their swords on their right side. Since authority
compromises three powers, the legislative, executive,
and Judiciary, Jesus is the supreme legislator, pastor,
and judge.
What is Jesus doing in Heaven?
Jesus Christ in Heaven intercedes constantly for us, as professed by St.
Paul: “Jesus Christ is at the right hand of god and indeed intercedes for
us (Romans 8:34).
While still on earth, Jesus was mainly the redeemer, because he paid
with his life for our salvation; but now that he is in Heaven, he is
primarily the mediator, because he intercedes between the Father and
humankind. As it is written: “ Christ enters Heaven itself, that he might
now appear before God on our behalf” ( Hebrews 9:24).
Although Jesus Christ dwells in Heaven, we can reach him every time
we pray, especially during the Eucharist, as he said: “ Where two or
three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of
them” ( Matthew 18:20).
