Henri Fayol {1841-1925}
• Was a French management theorist.
• Graduated from Mining Academy of St. Etienne in 1860.
• Joined a French mining company in 1860 as an engineer and rose
to the position of managing director in 1888.
• At that time the company was at the verge of bankruptcy.
• With his experience and with the application of his principles,
company excelled.
14 PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT
1. DIVISION OF WORK Each worker has
a specific task
Whole work must be
divided into small tasks or
jobs and each job must be
assigned to a trained
specialist who is competent
to perform it
2. AUTHORITY & RESPONSIBILITY
There should be a proper balance between authority and responsibility
3 Situation of relationship

3. DISCIPLINE
Refers to obedience to
rules and regulations of
the organisation, which is
necessary for systematic
working of the
organisation
4. UNITY OF COMMAND
Each subordinate should
receive orders and be
accountable to one and
only one superior
5. UNITY OF DIRECTION
There should be one head and one plan for group of activities having
same objective.
6. SUBORDINATION OF INDIVIDUAL
INTEREST TO GENERAL INTEREST
Interest of the organisation as a
whole must prevail over interest
of the individual or employees.
7. REMUNERATION OF EMPLOYESS
Remuneration should be just and
fair to everybody.
Within the paying capacity of the
firm.
Give them a reasonable standard
of living.
8. CENTALISATION AND DECENTRALISATION
There should be proper balance between centralisation and
decentralisation of organisation
9. SCALER CHAIN
Organisation should have a chain
of authority and communication
that runs from top to bottom and
should be followed by managers
and subordinates.
10. ORDER
There should be a place for
everything & everyone and
everything & everyone must be in
there place
11. EQUITY
There should not be any
discrimination among employees
on the basis of religion, language,
caste, gender, etc
12. STABILITY OF PERSONNEL
There should be proper efforts to achieve stability and continuity of
tenure of personnel.
13. INITIATIVE
Workers should be encouraged
and given opportunity to take
some initiative in making and
execution plans
14. ESPIRIT DE CORPS
Management should promote a team spirit of unity and harmony
among employees
