HOMEWORK
• It is one of the smallest states in India. Sikkim is
bordered by The Tibet Autonomous Region of
China to the north and Northeast, by Bhutan to
the southeast, by the Indian state of West
Bengal to the south, and by Nepal to the west.
The Capital is Gangtok, in the southeastern part
of the state
GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION

• Sikkim is a State in Northeast India. It is one of the


fastest growing, multiethnic and multilingual Indian
state. It borders Tibet in the north and northeast,
Bhutan in the east, Nepal in the west and West Bengal
in the south. SIkkim is also located close to India's
Siliguri corridor near Bangladesh. Sikkim is a
strategically located hill State covering an area of 7096
sq kms (which accounts for 0.2% of the total area of
India) Sikkim is one of the smallest States in India both
in terms of population and area. The present population
of Sikkim stands at 6.32 lakhs (approx.)
CLIMATE
Sikkims geographical location with its altitudinal variation allows
it to have tropical, temperate and alpine climatic conditions
within its small area of 7,096 kms.Temperature conditions vary
from sub-tropical in the southern lower parts to cold deserts in
the snowy north. It is also the most humid region in the whole
range of the Himalayas, because of its proximity to the Bay of
Bengal and direct exposure to Southern monsoon. Sikkim's
climate ranges from sub-tropical in the south to tundra in the
north. Most of the inhabited regions of Sikkim experience a
temperate climate, with temperatures seldom exceeding 28 °C
(82 °F) in summer. The average annual temperature for most of
Sikkim is around 18 °C (64 °F).
Monsoon is everyone's beloved season. It is the time when
nature wakes up from its deep sleep and rejuvenates. But the
monsoon in Sikkim takes the form of incessant rain during the
months from May till September while July be the wettest of all
FLAURA AND FAUNA
• FLAURA
Sikkim can be basically divided into three zones. The tropical from almost sea level to about
5000 feet, the temperate from 5000 to 11,000 feet and the alpine above 11,000 feet. Till
10,000 feet, there are terraced farmlands in which the Rice, Maize, Barley and Millet are
grown. Cardamoms, Oranges, Apples, Potatoes and Ginger are grown in abundance in the
state. The lower altitudes towards the south harbour jungle cats, Mongoose, House sparrows
etc. The jungles in the south, are teeming with plantains, Bamboos, Tree Ferns, Walnut, Sal
and Oak. Orchids also abound in areas with moderate altitudes. They are the pride of Sikkim
and there are about 600 species. They come in a wide variety of colours and sizes. The most
popular orchids of Sikkim are Cymbidiums, Vanda, Cattaleya, Hookeriana, Farmeri,
Dendrobium Amoenum. The Nobile Orchid has been declared as the State Flower of Sikkim.

In the temperate zone, the flora consist of Oak, Chestnut, Maple, Birch, Alder, Magnolia and
Silver Fir. In the arid cold alpine regions of Sikkim, roam the snow leopard and wild ass. There
are about 35 species of Rhododendrons in Sikkim and are found above the height of 10,000
feet. The Rhododendron Nivale grows barely a few inches above the ground. When
Rhododendron flower between the month of April and May, it is a sight to behold with hillsides
becoming shrouded in colour. The Rhododendron niveum has been declared as the State Tree
of Sikkim. At the treeless altitudes above 14,000 feet curious types of flowers in colours of
blue, red, violet blossom during summers just a few inches above the ground. The stones and
rocks also get coloured by lichens and mosses in amorphous pattern.
• FAUNA
The dense forests, hills and mountains of Sikkim are home to a huge variety of animal species from
musk deer and red panda , to bharal or blue sheep ,the Himalayan black bear and the exclusive snow
leopard. Due to enchroachments ,and climate change ,many of these are endangered and
threatened. The lowland forests of Sikkim are home to Sikkim's largest reptile Burmese python ,house
geckos, the Himalayan crestless porcupine , the Chinese pangolian ,and barking deer.Several species
of birds can also be found here -the great pied hornbill locally called 'hongraio', the red junglefowl
and more.

Sub-tropicals regions are home to the red panda, red fox vulpes , the golden jackel,leopards, Asiatic
black bear,palm civets, flying squirrels, wild boars,japalura lizards,cobras,kraits abd mountain pit
vipers. The gaur - one of India's largest bovids - has been seen in Pangolaka Wildilfe Sanctuary.
Besides being one of the primal adventure destinations in the country, Sikkim is also ideal bird
watching destination. It has more than 550 species of birdds , some of which have been declared
endangered .You will find a rich diversity of butterflies too- about half the 1,400 butterfly species
recorded in India are found here including the magnificient, but endangered Kaiser-i-Hind ,the Yellow
Gorgon and the Bhutan glory.You can spot them in the four sanctuaries in Sikkim and at the
Khangchendzonga National Park.

Sikkim's exceptional bio-diverse ladnscape supports over 22 restricted-range bird species, including
atleast 19 species that are endemic to the region and bird species that are not found anywhere else
in the world.Its unique position on the map means that, despite its small size,Sikkim,with over 550
species, has a bird list that is almost as diverse as that of Bhutan or Nepal.Due to the progressive
conservation policies of the goverment that are supported by the highly benign Buddhist religious
beliefs od locals ,Sikkim has a very high percentage of land under official protection as protected
areas (PA) or Important Bird Areas (IBA). The state provides legal protection to critical birds habitats
through a network of 22 IBAs and almost and equal number of PAs.
PEOPLE
• Clothes
The Kho or kabutar is a traditional dress worn by Bhutia, ethnic Sikkimese people
of Sikkim and Nepal. It is a loose, cloak-style garment that is fastened at the
neck on one side and near the waist with a silk or cotton belt similar to the
Tibetan chuba and to the Ngalop gho of Bhutan, but sleeveless.
• Occupation
Agriculture is the primary occupation of the inhabitants of the state. The major
crops of the state include rice, maize, tea, soybean, ginger, orange, pears,
potato and tomato. It is the top producer and exporter of large cardamoms in the
country.
• Food
Thukpa, Sikkim's most famous Sikkim Street food, is at the forefront of this
culinary trend Garlic, minced onions, with green jalapenos, are added to the
noodle stew to give it a spicy taste and a hint of acidity. This meal is available in
both vegan and non-vegan forms. Most of the Sikkimese people are meat eaters.
Varity of fresh n processed meats of mutton,beef,pork chicken and fish are
feasted in almost every meal. Locally fermented beverage such as Arra and
Chaang / Tongba also compliments the Sikkimese cuisine .od
• Tradition
The People of Sikkim consist of three ethnic groups, that is,
Lepcha, Bhutia and Nepali. Communities of different hues
intermingle freely in Sikkim to constitute a homogenous blend.
Hindu Temples coexist with Buddhist Monasteries, Churches,
Mosque and Gurudwara
The monks cover themselves with masks, sparkling jewels and
ceremonial swords and perform the famous mask dance in the
rhythm of trumpets and drums on special occasions and
festivals. Most of the people of Sikkim follow Buddhism and go
to worship in monasteries by offering butter lamps.
Bhutia folk dance”Tashi Sabdo”-This age old group dance
beautifully and gracefully shows the customs of offering khadas
(Scarfs) 0n auspicious occasion. The dancers dance to the
melodious tunes dully supported by musical instrument such as
Yarkha, Drum, Flute and Yangjey
The main traditional style is the Indian folk music known as
Tamang Selo, This music of the Tamang community is performed
to the rhythmic sound of “Dhamphu”, a musical instrument.
IMPORTANT PERSONALITIES
Important personality of Sikkim

• Sikkim has given birth to one of the most famous player in the football history
of India: Baichung Bhutia. Apart from Baichung Bhutia, there are also other
sportpersons from the field of archery and football
• Bhaichung Bhutia is an Indian footballer and a famous personality closely
associated with India’s sports fraternity, especially football. He was born on
15th December 1976 in Tinkitam, Sikkim.
• He is also called the “Sikkimese Sniper” for his shooting skills and has played
as a striker all of his football career. He is known for his pinpoint accuracy in
striking a goal and the powerful shots he delivered throughout his career.
• Bhutia was the captain of the national team and currently is acting manager
for the state football club of Sikkim. His professional club debut was in 1993,
when he played for Calcutta-based East Bengal and was the highest scorer in
the league.
• Bhutia was named as 1996 player of the year after that. Following his
success in the club games, Bhutia became the first Indian footballer to sign a
contract with a European club and English team, ‘Bury’, and the second in
Europe to play professionally. In addition, the player has had many
scholarships to his credit, a stadium named after him as a tribute to his
uncountable success.

TOURIST ATTRACTION
• Major tourist attractions include the Sanga Chelling
Monastery - the oldest monastery in Sikkim, Khecheopalri
Lake – regarded as one of the sacred lakes of Sikkim, and the
Sangay Waterfalls (10 km). Pelling offers stunning views of
the Koktang, Kumbhakarna, Rathong, Kabru, Dom,
Kanchenjunga, and Pandim.
• Sanga Choeling Monastery, built in 1697,
is also known as the place of secret spells.
It has clay statues dating back to the 17th century
The monastery was affected by fire several times and was
rebuilt. The Monastery's location provides very scenic and
panoramic view all round

• Sikkim might be one of the smallest states of the
country, but it is the richest and biggest when it comes
to natural splendour. Bordered by Bhutan, Tibet and
Nepal, Sikkim in the Northeast is blessed with some
dramatic landscapes. The amazingly beautiful places
to visit in Sikkim will astound you and excite you at the
same time. From mighty Himalayan ranges and
dazzling waterfalls to green forests and grand Buddhist
monasteries, Sikkim is a treasure trove of nature. Also
Kanchenjunga (8586 m above sea level), the third
