WHAT IS MECHANICS?
Mechanics can be defined as that science which describes and predicts
the conditions of rest or motion of bodies under the action of forces.
Classification of mechanics:
Engineering Mechanics
Mechanics of Solids
Mechanics of Fluids
Mechanics of rigid Mechanics of [Link] fluid
Bodies Deformable bodies [Link] fluid

Basic Concepts of Mechanics:
• The Parallelogram Law for the Addition of Forces: This states that
two forces acting on a particle may be replaced by a single force,
called their resultant , obtained by drawing the diagonal of the
parallelogram which has sides equal to the given forces.
Basic Concepts of Mechanics:
• The Principle of Transmissibility: This states that the conditions
of equilibrium or of motion of a rigid body will remain unchanged if a
force acting at a given point of the rigid body is replaced by a force of
the same magnitude and same direction, but acting at a different point,
provided that the two forces have the same line of action
Basic Concepts of Mechanics:
Newton’s Three Fundamental Laws :
• First Law: If ∑F=0 that is no force is applied, the particle will remain at
original condition
• Second Law: If∑F ≠ 0 , the particle will have an acceleration
proportional to the resultant force; i.e., ∑F α a or ∑F=ma
• Third Law: The action and reaction forces have the same magnitude,
same line of action but opposite direction
• Gravitational Law: Two particles M and m are mutually attracted with
equal and opposite force of F and –F ; where F =
Basic Concepts of Mechanics:
• Particles:
A particle has a mass but a size that can be neglected. For example,The
size of the earth is insignificant in compared to the size of its orbit and
therefore the earth can be modeled as a particle when studying it’s
orbital motion.
• When a body is idealized as particle, then the principle of mechanics
reduce to a simplified form since the geometry of the body will not be
involved in the analysis.
Basic Concepts of Mechanics:
• Rigid body: A rigid body can be considered as a combination of large
number of particles in which all the particles remain at a fixed
distance from one another before and after the force is applied.
