DEVELOPING THE
WHOLE PERSON
OBJECTIVES:
AT THE END OF THIS MODULE, YOU WILL BE ABLE TO:
1. DISCUSS THE RELATIONSHIP AMONG
PHYSIOLOGICAL, COGNITIVE, PSYCHOLOGICAL, SPIRITUAL AND
SOCIAL ASPECTS OF DEVELOPMENT, TO UNDERSTAND YOUR
THOUGHTS, FEELINGS, AND BEHAVIORS,
2. EVALUATE YOUR OWN THOUGHTS, FEELINGS AND
ACTIONS, AND
3. SHOW THE CONNECTION OF YOUR THOUGHTS,
FEELINGS AND ACTIONS TO ACTUAL LIFE SITUATIONS.
ASPECTS OF THE SELF
The self-concept is represented by several
aspects of the self. It is conceived as collection
of multiple, context-dependent selves. This
construct believes that context activates
particular regions of self-knowledge and self-
relevant feedback affects self-evaluations and
affect. A deeper look on the different aspects of
self can identify specific areas for self-
regulation, stability and improvement.
What is the first thing that
comes to your mind when you
think about being a teenager?
HOLISTIC DEVELOPMENT
The process of self-actualization
and learning that combines on
individuals mental, physical,
social, emotional, and spiritual
growth.
HOLISTIC DEVELOPMENT
Focuses on nurturing a child’s social,
emotional, physical and mental wellbeing
through creating a comfortable and safe
environment that allows a child to learn and
grow. It is developing the whole child not just
their academic understanding.
THE ASPECTS OF HOLISTIC
DEVELOPMENT
1. PHYSIOLOGICAL
DEVELOPMENT
- Rapid body growth
- Hair growth
- Muscle modification
The changes are preparing you to become
physically capable of biological reproduction.
2. COGNITIVE
DEVELOPMENT
The brain continues to develop.
You are beginning to think from concrete to
abstract terms and able to conceptualize
theoretical ideas.
Problems are now being evaluated logically
and scientifically.
3. PSYCHOLOGICAL
DEVELOPMENT
Changesin the emotions, feelings, moods
and manner of thinking.
Ongoing establishment of strong-hold
beliefs, values, and goals in life.
During the adolescence individuals undergo
the process of self-evaluation which leads to
long-range goal setting, emotional and social
independence, and maturity.
4. SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
You begin to rely more on your
friends or peer groups for support
than on your family. However, you
are more prone peer pressure.
5. SPIRITUAL
DEVELOPMENT
You begin to have interest in
spiritual concerns. You start
pondering on questions concerning
existence, essence, spirituality,
religion and GOD.
LET US EVALUATE YOUR:
1. THOUGHTS
2. FEELINGS
3. BEHAVIORS
THOUGHTS
Refers to the ideas or
arrangements of ideas that result
from thinking or the act of
producing thoughts.
FEELING
Denotes a state of
consciousness, such as that
resulting from emotions,
sentiments or desires.
BEHAVIOR
Refers to the range of actions and
mannerism made by individuals,
organism, or any entities in
conjunction with their environment.
Why do we need to
evaluate one’s
thoughts, feelings and
behavior?
One’s thoughts, feelings and
behavior are interconnected
and interrelated. In fact, they
influence and affect one
another.
Most negative feelings and
behaviors are generated by
negative thoughts.
Adolescents are also normally self-conscious and
sensitive individuals.
Making it a habit to assess one’s thoughts,
feelings and behaviors will give you the
opportunity to appraise the truth or validity of
one’s beliefs, appropriateness of one’s feelings
and emotions and the decency of one’s actions
and behaviors.
Adolescents should also remember that we
always have a choice on how we will look at
things.
The people around us do not necessarily
cause our feelings; we are the ones
responsible for them. We have a choice; we
Negative thoughts, counterproductive
feelings and self-destructive behaviors
should not enslave us.
We have the power to rid ourselves of
harmful thoughts, feelings and behaviors.
COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL
THERAPY
PSYCHOLOGISTS ALBERT ELLIS AND AARON BECK
Is talking therapy that can help you manage your problems by changing the way
you think and behave.
Is a structured, goal-oriented type of talk therapy. It can help manage mental
health conditions and emotional concerns.
Helps you become aware of inaccurate or negative thinking so you can view
challenging situations more clearly and respond to them in a more effective way.
They can help you cope with hard things, manage stress when it comes up, and
reshape your thought patterns when needed. The goal is to help you live a
productive, healthy life.
It focuses on changing unhelpful or unhealthy thoughts and behaviours. It is a
combination of 2 therapies: cognitive therapy and behaviour therapy. The basis of
both these techniques is that healthy thoughts lead to healthy feelings and
behaviours.
Through this therapeutic intervention,
an individual can change his/her
thoughts which leads to a change in his
feeling and behavior.
The key, therefore, is in the positive
interpretation of things.
