Iconic memory &
ltm types
• Iconic memory is the storage for visual memory that
allows people to visualize an image after the physi-
cal stimulus is no longer present. It is a type of sen-
sory memory that lasts just milliseconds before fad-
ing.
• Iconic memory is thought to last only a few 100 ms
after perception
Long-term memory refers to the storage of information
over an extended period. This type of memory tends to be
stable and can last a long time—often for years. Long-term
memory can be further subdivided into two different
types: explicit and implicit memory.
If you can remember something that happened more than
just a few moments ago, whether it occurred just hours
ago or decades earlier, then it is a long-term memory.
Explicit
Explicit memories are those that are consciously recalled. This in-
ludes memories of events from your life as well as the memory o
facts and other learned information.
Example:Birth dates of friends and family members
Types of Explicit Memory
1-episodic memory
2-sematic memory
Implicit memories are unconscious and automatic. This
includes memories of how to perform tasks that you do
every day. Rather than consciously recalling how to
ride a bike, you are able to perform the task without re-
ally thinking about it.
Example:
Remembering the words to a popular song after
hearing the first few notes
Types of implicit memory:
1-procedural 2- emotional
Procedural memory, also called im-
plicit memory, is a type of long-term
memory involved in the performance
of different actions and skills.
A
The memory system that links per-
ceptual information to an emotional
response. For example, spotting a
friend in a crowd causes a person
to feel happy.
